The deeper into the postseason one goes, the more heartbreaking the losses can be. This would be the case for the Shenango Wildcats as they are blown out in the WPIAL 1A semi-finals against the powerhouse known as the Clairton Bears by a score of 55-16.

The Wildcats would start with possession of the football and be the first ones to strike as senior kicker Aiden Johnston makes good on a nine-yard kick to cap off an 18-play drive. The Bears would only need two plays to make an impact on the scoreboard as senior quarterback Jonte Sanders runs 82 yards for a Clairton touchdown to make the score six to three to close the quarter.

On the first play of the new quarter, Shenango quarterback Santino Campoli was intercepted by senior defensive back Davion Rochelle and he would take it to the house for six more points.

The Wildcats would get a chance to answer, but they went three-and-out while on the Bears’ next drive, it would end with senior running back Dontae Sanders rushing in for the 27-yard score.

Shenango could not get anything done offensively, but Clairton had no problems putting up points as Dontae Sanders would score on a short run, and Jonte Sanders finding senior Tyyon Cobbs for the two-point conversion to make it 26-3.

Again, Shenango was lifeless and they had to punt the ball back to the Bears and they would take advantage of that. Clairton would end yet another drive with points as Dontae Sanders found a hole in the Wildcats defense and rushed for a 74-yard touchdown.

Shenango would finally answer with their first touchdown of the night. Campoli found sophomore CJ Miller in the end zone and Miller came down with the ball for the score. It would now be 33-9 to close out the first half.

The Bears would start the second half with the ball, but would quickly lose it as on third down, Jonte Sanders was stripped and the loose ball was recovered by senior Reis Watkins. The ball would go back to Clairton again as Shenango botched the snap at their 15-yard line, the ball rolled into the end zone and Bears’ senior lineman Allen Rice fell on the loose change and got the points for his team to make it 41-9.

The Wildcats were down, but not out and they kept fighting. They would get their second and last score of the game with Campoli finding junior wide receiver Dalton Peters for the touchdown. Johnston’s kick would make it 41-16.

The Bears, on the next drive, would experience their first and only turnover-on-downs for their next drive and Shenango would end with another punt.

Clairton would fix their mistakes and score another touchdown as Jonte Sanders found junior Brooklyn Cannon for a 34-yard passing touchdown.

Shenango would try to keep pushing for a touchdown on their next drive, but on a fourth and one, the Clairton defense shut down the offense for a turnover-on-downs.

As Clairton sets up after their defense just made a huge stop, they would have to send them back out to make another defensive stop as there was a fumble and it was recovered by Wildcat junior lineman Jason Domenick. However, the Shenango offense was stopped just a couple of plays later as Campoli was picked again. This time by Cobbs.

The Bears would use Cobbs’ interception to score one more touchdown to seal the game up. Sophomore quarterback Capone Jones jukes himself 22 yards for the touchdown to have the scoreboard read 55-16 in favor of Clairton.

The Bears will play on November 14th at Martorelli Stadium in North Hills at 11 am against the Jeannette Jayhawks.
