Chartiers Valley Upsets South Fayette on Senior Night

September 18, 2020
Chartiers Valley Colts v. South Fayette Lions
Chartiers Valley High School Stadium, Bridgeville, PA

In a senior night contest early in the season, the Colts and Lions got off to sluggish starts offensively. South Fayette moved the ball into the redzone before turning it over. Finally overcoming a determined and resilient Chartiers Valley defense with a 3-yard TD pass early in the second frame.

Chartiers Valley missed a short 28-yard field goal late in the half, and an extra point when they scored on a surprise 27 yard TD pass down the middle of the defense. Trailing 7-6, the powerful Lions offense stalled frequently, and Chartiers Valley got the ball with just a couple minutes remaining. Driving the field with determination.

Chartiers Valley with a 3rd and 5 at the 8 yard line with 41 seconds remaining. After gaining 3 yards, it set up a 4th and 2 from the 5. The kicker, Jacob Salsberry, came on to redeem himself after the two earlier misses. His 22 yard kick was true, and left the underdog Colts up, 9-7 with just 17 seconds remaining.

After a promising return by the Lions, South Fayette ate the rest of clock on one play, a scramble in the backfield by the QB trying to find anything downfield that was open, before getting hit and fumbled. The ball bouncing out of bounds as the remaining seconds ticked away. Giving the Chartiers Valley Colts an emotional and rewarding victory on Senior Night.
