The Pittsburgh City League is in full swing and we’ve learned quite a bit about each of the teams in the City League as we near the halfway point of their regular season, so it’s a good time for PAFN to wrap up this week and take a look at each team as they near the turn.

This Week:

Westinghouse took advantage of a host of Allderdice turnovers and mental lapses to turn in an impressive victory on Thursday night behind the fantastic play of senior QB Keyshawn Morsillo. Morsillo is the bus driver for the ‘House offense and continues to showcase himself each week as the most underrated QB in Pennsylvania. House took down Dice 38-7

Friday’s City League slate saw everyone else in action. University took down Carrick in the afternoon game, methodically wearing the Raiders down and earning a 36-0 win behind solid running from Terell Allen-Tooks.

The Perry-Brashear contest on Friday night was the most competitive regular season game in the three years this writer has been covering the Pittsburgh City League. A see-saw battle between two evenly matched teams saw Perry escape with a 28-20 win. Brashear, plagued by injuries to numerous starters including both of their D-1 commits(Ta’Mere Robinson-PSU- and Kameron Cheatom-Akron), were paced by senior running back Shawn Solomon, who shouldered the load on Friday night and should be drawing attention of PSAC and WV D2s.

Thoughts At The Turn:

Westinghouse: The title is theirs to lose. They’ve got a lightning bolt offense, the best athletes in the City League and a depth chart that rivals many 6A schools. Their biggest opponent left this year is themselves. Staying grounded and working hard will be key.

Allderdice: They’re the battle tested team. The results haven’t been there but Jerry Haslett hasn’t ducked anyone outside the city, tackling Altoona, North Allegheny and Dover(OH). He’s still got Steubenville(OH) to go. They’ll find City League wins for sure and then the brutal schedule kicks in as far as being ready for the post season. Jerry is also the “Mad Scientist” of the City League, so who knows what he’d have up his sleeve for the next game against ‘House, provided they make the final.

University: Lou Berry has a solid QB in junior Max Qureshi and a rugged downhill runner in Terrell Allen-Tooks, a 6’0” 200lb senior. There’s a plethora of athletes on the team, though they’re a bit undersized at WR and DB. They’ve also found themselves in tough games outside the City and are looking ahead to what lies ahead.

Perry: Turning the corner this year is the theme. They’ve beaten Brashear and Seton LaSalle. They took Harrison Central from Cadiz,OH to the wire. They could beat University and Carrick to end the season and ride into the playoffs on a high note.

Brashear: Drew Moore’s Bulls are once again being decimated by injury. Last year’s bright season got thrown off the rails when almost a dozen players got injured. They’ve been unable to escape it this year and the wheels are in danger of going off the bus on the season. Not having Ta’Mere Robinson and Kameron Cheatom is a brutal combo to lose as if we made a City League talent list, they’d be first and second overall. Credit to Moore, who still took on all comers and keeps pushing forward even as the injuries mount once again.

Carrick: Greg Johnston came into a rough situation. Carrick finished 2020’s final game with 11 players. He’s found a way to bring some more numbers out to the team, preached the commitment and now results are starting to come forth for the Raiders. They’re outside the City League and playing as an Independent while they rebuild, which was the right choice to make. They’ve found successes this year, beating Brownsville(42-8) and Carlynton(14-0). They’ve still got a road back, but if you’re looking at a 5 year plan, this is the right way to do it. They’ve got a winnable game against Steubenville Catholic Central(OH) next week before tough ones with Wheeling Central Catholic(WV), Trinity and Uniontown at the end of the year. This is a good mix of winnable games and contests against teams “where they want to be”.
