Questions existed after Westinghouse graduated the best player in the city league, amongst a talented crop of seniors. How would the Bulldogs respond? Thursday night, we saw that they haven’t missed a beat. They used an explosive offense and a hard hitting defense, combined with some opportune mistakes from Perry, to march to a 36-0 Pittsburgh Public League victory and push their record to 3-0(3-0).

THE GAME

Westinghouse started fast with several big gains, including a 20 yard run by Keyshawn Morsillo and a 14 yard pass from the sophomore QB  to junior Malik Harris. They got inside the 10, but four straight running plays failed to find paydirt and a big goal  line stand by the Commodores bailed them out of a tough situation.

Perry took over on their 1 yard line and came out in a spread set, and a handoff that went off tackle couldn’t get out of the endzone and the House took a 2-0 lead after the safety with 8:05 to go in the first.

On their second drive, House began with a 21 yard bruising run by Harris, however penalties and excellent penetration on D by Perry, who blew up three plays in a row to force a 4th and long. On 4th down, Morsillo was brought down for a 7 yard loss by a host of tacklers.

Perry went three and out, and a bobbled snap on 4th down gave House excellent field position inside the Perry 20. While the quarter ran out, Perry found paydirt on 4th and goal early in the 2nd quarter to extend their lead to 8-0.

Perry’s ensuing drive was short lived, and a sack on QB Rayvon Cutler set up 4th and Sea Isle City for the Commodores. The snap was over the punters head, and was recovered in the endzone. There was debate as to if senior Emilio Valentine had it for House or if the punter fell on it, and the referees ruled a safety, pushing the lead to 10-0.

On the Westinghouse drive that followed, they tacked on another score as Morsillo completed a pass to senior Timothy Jones for a 34 yard TD, video game style, as Jones one handed a ball that was out of reach and went untouched to the endzone. The conversion failed, making it 16-0 with 6:18 to go in the second.

Perry began to find some movement on their next drive, as Cutler hit Arrington for an 11 yard gain out to midfield. Following several House penalties, Cutler carried for 6 and a new set of downs in Westinghouse territory with 3:00 to go. After two plays that stalled, a House penalty set up 3rd and 3. Cutler hit Tyrese Fearbry for 3 yards and a first down, down to the House 33. Perry took a timeout with :28 to go and set themselves up for a shot at a score. Cutler was sacked to the 45, a loss of 12, with :15 to go. Cutlers pass was picked by Jairon King, who returned to midfield before being tackled, ending the half at 16-0.

Perry began the third quarter from their 32. On 2nd and 13, Cutler hit Tyrese Fearbry for a gain of 25 and a new set of downs inside House territory with 9:40 to go. The drive stalled and despite a Cutler scramble, his run came up short and House took over on downs, up 16-0 with 4:53 to go third.

The Westinghouse drive went 3 and out, giving Perry yet another big stop, but the offense gave the ball right back as Cutler’s pass was picked by Emilio Valentine, giving House the ball at the Perry 41 with 3:30 to go in the 3rd.  House could not mount an offense and Perry took over at their 28.

Perry fumbled a snap and it was recovered by Morsillo for a TD that extended the House lead with 1:28 in the third to 24-0.

Perry turned the ball over on downs after a bad snap on a punt, and Harris carried 7 yards for a House touchdown, extending the lead to 30-0, with the 2 point attempt no good.

Sophomore Shaun Robinson added an additional score to make it 36-0 with 3:34 to go and bring running time in the fourth quarter, rounding out the victory.

LOOKING AHEAD

Westinghouse has answered the questions so far. A team which has quite a few new faces and lost a top recruit in Pennsylvania, coupled witha strong underclassman presence, is sitting 3-0 and put on a fine performance tonight. After a steady win over Brashear and a tough 8-0 win over an always competitive Allderdice, they turned on the jets tonight and look like a team that’s hitting its stride. They’ve got a good one with University coming up next week.

Perry, now 1-2, will look to get back on track against Brashear next weekend. Their defense is pretty good, but they still need to work on getting a push offensively and cutting down on turnovers.
