It was a chilly night at Dutch Country Stadium in St. Marys, but things really warmed up in the second quarter for the visiting Central Clarion Wildcats, whose 48-27 triumph kept their undefeated season intact at 9-0. The Wildcats scored 28 points, the last 14 of those in twelve seconds, to give themselves a little breathing room heading into the intermission over the upset-minded Flying Dutch. “It took us a little bit, but I think we wore their defensive front down towards the second quarter,” stated Central Clarion’s head coach Dave Eggleton.

St. Marys led 6-0 after one quarter and 13-7 half way through the second before the Wildcats turned on the jets scoring 3 touchdowns in a little over 3 minutes. It began with Connor Kopnitsky’s second rushing touchdown of the game at the 3:53 mark which gave Eggleton’s squad a 14-13 lead. Then with 52 seconds remaining in the half, quarterback Jase Ferguson found a wide-open Tommy Smith over the middle for a 16-yard touchdown pass to increase the lead to 21-13. Smith, on the very next play, picked off Charlie Coudriet’s pass in the flats and returned it 25 yards for a score with 40 ticks left on the clock. That upped Central Clarion’s lead to 28-13 and they never looked back.

“It was a huge momentum swing going into the half. That little series there turned the tide of the game I thought,” said Eggleton. “That took them out of their game plan. They didn’t feel like they could be as patient running the football like they wanted to be. They had to start throwing the football more,” added Eggleton.
Central Clarion had the only score in the third quarter and took a 34-13 margin into the 4th quarter where the teams traded touchdowns to set the final score at 48-27. The game was kind of a sloppy game between penalties and turnovers. In fact, there were 8 turnovers in the game, 4 by each team. Seven of the turnovers were interceptions. Central Clarion outgained St. Marys for the night 429-271.
Kopnitsky had 3 rushing touchdowns and Ferguson threw for 3 more for the Wildcats. Ferguson passed for 275 yards and ran for another 84. He also was picked off 3 times. Ashton Rex caught 8 passes for 166 yards and 2 touchdowns. “Jase, I thought had a good game. He threw a couple of ill-advised passes, but he made some big passes. Ashton Rex is one of the best receivers in the district and the state. You can’t man up on him and cover him one on one,” Eggleton observed.
The Flying Dutch of St. Marys was led by Charlie Coudriet’s 4 TD passes, 2 to Carter Chadsey and 2 to Collin Reitz. Coudriet threw for 228 yards, but also threw 4 interceptions. Reitz grabbed 7 passes for 140 yards. Chadsey has 8 catches for 73 yards.
Next week Central Clarion 9-0 plays Redbank Valley 8-1. Eggleton had this to say about the Wildcats’ next game, “Since about mid-season everyone’s been talking about that one. We’ve been focused on the week at hand and trying to keep our guys not thinking about it. We can now focus on that one. They (Redbank) have a great team and a great program. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a Redbank fan in the playoffs last year. I was rooting for them to go deep as a District 9 team. Coach Gold has built a great program down there and the kids know how to win football games. It’s going to be a good one.”
