Just before halftime from the Mount Union 5, Jake Mullins lined up for what would have been a chip shop field goal with just seconds remaining. Two Mt Union penalties later they were on the one going for the score but Chase Irwan was dropped for a loss as time expired.  It was one of five first half drives that didn’t end with a scoring play. The other nine did. This is a story about 13 touchdowns.

Coach Andy Evanko Stadium

Last night I returned to the scene of my very first twitter highlight post ever. NOW Coach Andy Evanko Stadium It was a touchdown run by Curwensville’s Nick Stewart back in 2015. He ran for 3 touchdowns and 160 yards that night. Little did I know I’d set the keyboard of my phone on fire pumping out scoring highlights. Curwensville and Mt Union combined for over 1000 yards of offense, 13 touchdowns and a whole stack of yellow flags in a game that lasted three hours and 13 minutes with the Trojans coming out on top with a 54-36 win. Oh, did I mention this game was supposed to be played at Mt Union on Friday? Yeah, thanks to hurricane Ida I was able to be there for this offensive explosion.  We’ll try and cover the highlights.

On the fifth play of the game, Mt. Union quarterback Dayvon Wilson hit Cainen Atherton over the middle for a 55 yard td. It was the only td pass of the night for Wilson. Instead, he turned in 237 yards on 16 carries, scoring on carries of 11, 3 and 23 yards. The Trojans forced a punt and it looked as though we were in for a “regular” game.  The Trojans got flagged for a five yard penalty, Curwensville made a stop, and then it happened. The flood gates that moved the game to Curwensville on a Saturday night opened up.  Wilson busted loose for a 38 yard gain, then went in from 11 yards out to make it a 14-0 lead.

On the ensuing kick, Thad Butler turned the corner and raced 65 yards for the score making it a 14-7 Trojan lead.  Gotta slow down now right? Beginning of the game adrenaline rush over right? Wilson takes off for a 57 yard run on the next play, then Je”Saun Robinson scores from 10 yards out giving the Trojans what looked like a comfortable 21-7 lead heading into the second quarter.  Not too comfortable. Tide quarterback Daniel McGarry hit Butler for a one play, 51 yard td drive. They converted the 2 point play and trailed 22-15. During the drive, they found something that worked. The bubble screen.  On their next series, McGarry found Mullins for 44 yards, then Ty Terry pulled down a 17 yard td pass, McGarry’s second of four on the night. The Tide quarterback totaled 20-28 completions for 403 yards passing on the night with two interceptions. Terry hauled in 13 of those passes for 203 yards and the two tds.

The Tide actually gained momentum on the previous two series, and stretched their lead to 29-21 on their next offensive play, a 61 yard td pass to Terry. It was all Mt Union from there. Wilson busted off a 53 yard run, then a three yard td run to make it a 29-27 Tide lead. Then Je’Saun Robinson got his second td of the night when he stepped in front of a McGarry pass, his first of 2 interceptions, and raced 61 yards to give the Trojans the lead back for good, 34-29 heading into the break.

“I don’t know that I’ve ever been in a game that lasted that long” said new Trojan head coach Anthony Sottasante. “We knew they were able to score a lot of points coming into the game, we still have a long way to go but we do have to work with our skill guys to get them more involved in the game.”

Robinson intercepted McGarry again on the first drive of the second half and it was all Trojans from there on out.  Jayvien Brunbaugh gave Mt Union a 41-29 lead on a 3 yard run, then Robinson ripped off a 70 yard score near the end of the third quarter to up the lead to 47-29.  The screen game that worked so well for Curwensville in the first half was shut down by the Trojans. “We made some adjustments at halftime. We also made some adjustments on the kicking game which was atrocious in the first half” said Sottasante. Ty Terry, who had a heck of a game, intercepted the next two Wilson passes, but the Tide couldn’t take advantage of the turnovers. Wilson scored one more time from 23 yards out and Terry hauled in his third td pass of the night, a 57 yard catch, to close out the scoring.

Notes:

MT Union racked up a total of 411 yards on the ground.

McGarry had 413 all purpose yards and 4 td passes

Je’Saun Robinson had two interceptions

Ty Terry hauled in 13 passes for 273 yards and had 2 interceptions on defense

Dayvon WIlson ran for 237 yards and 3 scores and threw for another
