COATESVILLE: When you have a running back with over 3,000 rushing yards in his career, as Juelz Chiron Robinson has for Downingtown East, you have to figure that, sooner or later, an opponent is going to stack the box and try to take away your run game. On Friday night, that’s exactly what the Coatesville Red Raiders tried to do. Unfortunately for the Red Raiders, the Cougars showed that, when they need to, they can throw the ball, and they did, with Ethan Ellis’s arm, outlasting the Red Raiders 31-28 in a Chest-Mont slugfest.

“We knew coming into this game that they (Coatesville) were a really good football team. We knew they had a chip on their shoulders. We knew it was going to be a dogfight, knew it was going to take all 11 guys offensively, defensively special teams and we came out just did our job and did it well.” Ellis said.”

After the game, Cougars Head Coach Michael Matta praised the Red Raiders saying, “All credit to them; their kids played really well. That number 1 (Andre Watson Jr.) is a handful, and we really didn’t have an answer for him. You got to give lot of credit to Coatesville; it wasn’t that we played down or overlooked them we played our best football they were just really good. They had a great scheme, they did a great job all credit goes to them.

Yes, Chiron-Robinson did finish the game with 169 yards on 18, but 152 of them on two carries. The first of those carries came on the Cougars’ first offensive play from scrimmage following a Red Raiders three-and-out to begin the game. The Cougars took over on their own 30, and on the first play they handed the ball to Chiron-Robinson, who broke a few tackles, then went off to races, going 70 yards for the touchdown and the early 7-0 lead for the Cougars.

On their ensuing drive, the Red Raiders countered right back with an eight-play, 51-yard drive that was capped with Andre Watson Jr. punching it from 5 yards out, tying the game up at 7.

After forcing the Cougars to punt on their next drive, the Red Raiders took and pieced together a 14 play 90-yard drive that feature Mikal Shank Jr finding Nico Christino for a gain of 30 yards, then with Sage Bradshaw for a 23-yard gain that put the Red Raiders at the Cougars 1. On fourth-and goal Watson capped the drive with his second touchdown of the day, giving the Red Raiders the 14-7 lead.

After both teams traded punts on their next drives, the Cougars needed just one play to draw even with the Red Raiders, when it looked like the Red Raiders had bottled up; he got through the defense, and it was off to the races. He went 80 yards to tie the game up at 14 with 58 seconds left in the first half, and that’s how the teams headed into the locker room.

The Red Raiders came out of the half and reached into their bag of tricks, successfully pulling off an onside kick to give them possession, and the Red Raiders took advantage, going 44 yards on 4 plays including a 32 Shank to Bradshaw connection that put the Red Raiders at the Cougars 11 two plays later Watson found the end zone for the third time on the day this time from 7 yards out putting the Red Raiders up 21-14.

Once again, the Cougars struck quickly, on the first play of the drive, Ellis connected with Shane Keenan for a 31-yard gain that put the Cougars at the Red Raiders’ 7. The Red Raiders then stuffed Chiron-Robinson on the next play before Ellis found Keenan for the 7-yard touchdown, tying the game up at 21.

Keenan wasn’t done just yet for the Cougars on the ensuing possession; he intercepted Shank.

The Cougars took advantage of the turnover, putting together a 14-play drive that was capped with a 37-yard field goal by Paul Selden on the final play of the third quarter, giving the Cougars the 24-21 lead and setting the stage for the fourth quarter.

On the ensuing Red Raiders drive, they needed only 4 plays to take back the lead with Watson’s fourth touchdown of the day, this one from 35 yards out, making it 28-24 in favor of the Red Raiders.

On the ensuing drive, the Cougars marched 65 yards on 10 plays with Ellis connecting Madden Miller for a pair of big receptions on the drive. But it was Ellis’s legs that made the difference on 2&G from the 6. Ellis faked a handoff off to Chiron-Robinson and rolled out to his left, took a hit, and reached the pylon for the touchdown, putting the Cougars up 31-28.

The Red Raiders and Cougars traded punts on the next two drives, giving the Red Raiders one final chance. On a 3rd and 10 from the Cougars 44 it appeared has if the Red Raiders have taken the lead when Shank connected with Christino for the 44-yard touchdown only to have it be wiped out by a penalty. On fourth down, Shank was sacked and fumbled the ball, which Joseph Griffiths recovered to preserve the victory for the Cougars.

With the victory, the Cougars clinched the Chest-Mont North Division championship outright, and that made Chiron-Robinson so happy. “I’m so proud of every single person on the team, from the players, coaches, and fans. I am so thankful.” He added, “It means the world to me. I really do everything I do for Coach Matta. He sacrifices so much for the team to get him the Chest-Mont championship is very special to me, to the players that sacrifice their bodies for me, every single day, every single week it just warms my heart.”

Next week the Cougars will look to close out a perfect regular season when they host Kennett, while Coatesville will look to get back into the win column when they travel to Bishop Shanahan. Both games kick off next Friday at 7 pm.
