KENNETT SQUARE: After losing to their cross-town rival Downingtown East last week the Downingtown West Whippets knew they had to quickly turn the page and focus on finishing out their regular season. On Friday night, the Whippets faced another difficult task battling the Unionville Longhorns, who entered with an identical 5-2 record. Neither playing without UMass commit RB Amari Cannon or the steady rain came down throughout the game could slow down the Whippets’ ground game or defense, as they had no problem easily wrangling up the Longhorns and running away with a dominating 40-0 victory in a Chest-Mont cross-over game.
“As soon as we walked off the field last Friday, we said it was all about what the next three weeks would do for us. It’s not about who we are playing but how we play and we use lessons like what happened last week to make us a better team. Whippets Head Coach Tom Kline said, adding, “I’m excited for this team.”
Being without their D1 recruit Cannon and the steady rain meant the Whippets had to rely on their stable of running backs and their offensive line to get the job done. That was no problem; the offensive line consisting of Tom Sheplock, Dan Iademarcon, Finn McGovern, Ben Ryan, Ian Hawkins, and Ryder Harlan paved the way for the nine different players that got a carry to pick up a total of 255 yards on 42 total carries and five touchdowns. “We are just a great group of guys. We get the work done; we go work hard in practice every week.” McGovern said. When asked about the play of him and his fellow linemen, McGovern said: “When Ben Ryan went down, Ian Hawkins stepped up. I thought he did a great job; I thought we were good off the ball, hitting guys, being physical, just doing what we are supposed to be doing.”
As impressive as the Whippets offense was, the Defense was just as impressive, limiting the Longhorns to just 8 first downs and 137 yards of total offense and forcing two Longhorn turnovers. In addition, they only allowed the Longhorns to get inside the Whippets’ 30 one time. The leader of the defense on Friday night was Wyatt Fowler, who had both of the Whippets’ interceptions. “All week we knew we had to come into this game firing; we knew that was a 5-2 Unionville team. We knew they would come out running the ball, trying to run the ball with their QB. They started getting yards at first, but once we pieced everything together and knew what they were doing, it was just three-and-outs, three-and-outs, three-and-outs, and they couldn’t get anything.” Fowler added, “All 11 of us just put in the work tonight; to have zero points on a Friday night is a hard thing to do, and we kept them to it. Every single player did their part, and we worked as a team.”
Right from the start, the Whippets set the tone quickly, forcing the Longhorns to punt and taking over in Longhorn territory. The offense came out firing, needing eight plays, all runs, to take the 7-0 lead when Max Levey powered his way in from a yard out.

On the ensuing Longhorn possession, they did manage to pick up two first downs before their drive stalled and they had to punt the ball back to the Whippets. The Whippets offense went right back to work, with Marcus McComsey picking up 45 yards on the first play of the drive, bringing the ball to the Longhorn 20, and on the next play Caiden Gray made it 14-0 with his 20-yard touchdown run.
The Whippets offense made it a perfect 3 for 3 on drives ending in touchdowns on their next possession, marching 41 yards on eight plays with Max Wolfington capping the drive with his 1-yard touchdown, making it 21-0 with 8:48 in the 2nd quarter

On the next Whippets drive, McGovern got to live out every offensive lineman’s dream by getting a carry, and he made the most of it, powering his way in from a yard out, making it 27-0 Whippets with 3:23 left in 2Q.

In the second half, the Whippets offense picked up right where they left off in the first half, taking the opening possession and marching 65 yards on 13 plays, with the capper coming when Devin Manning connected with Brendon Goode-Kimble for a 9-yard touchdown, making it 33-0.

The ensuing Longhorn drive ended when Fowler intercepted Longhorn QB Chase Johnson for the second time in the game, setting up the final score of the night: a 1-yard run by Gray.
The Whippets (6-2) will look to build on this momentum as they head into next week, when they host cross-town rival Bishop Shanahan, while the Longhorns (5-3) will look to get back in the win column when they host Sun Valley. Both games kick off at 7 pm next Friday.
