Duda’s Big Night Propels Honesdale over Crestwood

On the opening drive, it appeared that Honesdale went three and out. Instead, they opened up their bag of tricks and pulled off a fake punt that gave them a first down. From there, the Hornets proceeded to dominate as Gabe Duda scored four touchdown en route to a 36-7 victory over Crestwood in Mountain Top. “We spend a lot of time on special teams. The kids work on it, so we figure we’ll use it in the game.” Said Honesdale head coach George Howanitz of the fake punt.
The Hornets received the opening kickoff and looked like they went three and out, instead Gabe Duda threw a pass to Keegan DeGraw for 22 yards to the Comets 43 yard line. On the next play, Duda scored from 43 yards to make it 7-0 with 9:47 remaining in the first quarter.

Crestwood fumbled on their first play of the drive and Honesdale recovered inside the Comets 10 yard line. Two plays later, Dontae Joseph scored from six yards out. After some Crestwood penalties, the Hornets went for two at the one yard line. Honesdale converted for two and it was 15-0 Hornets with 8:56 left in the first quarter.

The Comets got one first down on the next drive, but were forced to punt. The punt pinned the Hornets at their own two yard line. They went on a long drive that ended early in the second quarter with Duda scoring from three yards out for his second touchdown of the game to make it 22-0 with 11:38 left in the first half.

On the next Crestwood drive, Teddy Taylor found Jack Rodgers for a 27 yard catch and run. However, they turned the ball over on downs and Honesdale took over as Duda scored his third touchdown of the game from 18 yards out for a 29-0 lead with 7:59 remaining in the second quarter and that was the score at halftime.
The Hornets cruised through the second half. Duda scored his fourth touchdown of the game from six yards out to make it 36-0 with 2:28 left in the third quarter. The Comets got on the board as Freshman Riley Wojchiechowski scored from four yards out to make it 36-7 with 5:41 remaining in the game and that was the final score. Honesdale hosts Western Wayne next week. Crestwood goes on the road next week to play Wyoming Area.
