Executive Routs Griffins in Lysek Field Opener; Whitsitt Accounts for 6 Touchdowns

The excitement had been building for months over Executive Education’s new field atop the parking deck behind the high school. A 4,000-seat stadium with futuristic turf, LED lights, video board–you name it, and the school delivered on all the promises and then some. Shawntez Whitsitt will go down in history as scoring not just the first touchdown in Lysek Field history, but the first THREE, as the Raptors surpassed the Griffins 51-8 to open a new chapter in the school’s athletic presence in the city of Allentown.

Ayden Ramos had the first big play of the night for the Raptors, taking off through the middle for 39 yards and putting the offense in the red zone two plays into the game. A 4th & Goal pass fell incomplete in the back left corner of the end zone.

But the Raptors were right back in business, because on Palumbo’s first play from scrimmage, the ball came out. Darren West recovered the ball and Executive was right back in a Goal to go spot. Tez Whitsitt made history by scoring the first touchdown at the new field, cruising in from six yards out. He tossed to a wide open Ayden Ramos for two points and the early 8-0 lead with 9:19 to go in the opening quarter.

Griffins quarterback Jemel Middleton showed major fight on the ensuing possession. He escaped major pressure in the backfield to pickup 20 yards and push the ball near the Raptors red zone. But a fourth down pass from Middleton went just beyond the fingertips of Luc Sim-Laramee for a second straight turnover on downs.

It took Executive five plays to traverse the field. Lezius Bravo plowed ahead for 20 yards and Darius Kohler’s catch along the far sideline put the Raptors inside the 20. Tez housed it on the first play of the second quarter, 18 yards for the touchdown.

The Griffins got a nice kickoff return and took over in Executive territory. On a 4th & 2 call at the Raptors 23, Palumbo opted for the pass play to Kyle Tran. He was open, but the ball went through his hands for the turnover. Palumbo got a second chance after a Whitsitt pass was deflected in traffic over the middle and was brought in by Tymir Gooding.

But on a night where the Philadelphia Pub League team had its opportunities, Executive’s defense stood strong each time. On this possession, the Griffins began near midfield but did not pickup a first down and were forced to punt the ball away. One play later, Whitsitt kept it and rumbled to the end zone for a 57-yard touchdown. The game was now well in hand at 22-0 with 3:18 left in the opening half.

Palumbo started with more excellent field position on their ensuing drive. However, a deep pass was picked off by Thompson IV and ran back near midfield. A holding penalty on the return, though, brought the ball back inside the Executive 10. Following a turnover, the Griffins took over and Middleton scored from three yards out. He added a 2-point conversion run to cut the lead to 22-8 just before the break.

But ‘just before the break’ wasn’t close enough for the road team. The Raptors’ offense took a deep shot and connected. Whitsitt threaded the needle between near triple coverage to Bravo, who made a diving grab at the 10. With one play left, as the clock hit 0:00, Whitsitt hit on a pass to Ramos for the touchdown. At halftime, Executive led 28-8 on their new field.

The pressure was all on Palumbo in the second half. Darius Kohler made that literal, slamming down Middleton in the backfield to force a fourth down on the Griffins’ opening drive. A desperation pass by Middleton fell to Bravo, who returned his interception near the Palumbo 35. Whitsitt would end up lofting one into the back corner of the end zone for a 3-yard completion and score to Dexter Connor. Whitsitt used his legs to power in for two more points and a 36-8 lead with 3:31 to go in the third.

The quarter ended as Darren West picked off another long Middleton pass. West returned the ball to the Griffins 15. On the first play of the fourth, the home team put the game in the mercy rule. Ayden Ramos cruised into the end zone, the only touchdown on the night for Executive that Whitsitt didn’t play a direct role in.

Academy at Palumbo consistently had great field position in this contest, but four turnovers doomed them, fueling the home crowd and the momentum for the historic evening.

Executive Education enjoyed enormous fan support all night long. Toomey Anderson, known to many as Mr. Awesome, was the evening’s PA announcer and added even more to the atmosphere at the new facility.

The Raptors improve to 4-1 and now hit the road to open Delaware Valley Conference play at Penn Wood next weekend. Academy at Palumbo fell to 1-4 and looks to right the ship against Benjmain Franklin.
