Fort Cherry scored all 50 of their points in a high flying first half defined by an elite rushing attack.
Senior halfback Ryan Huey started the game with two touchdowns inside the 10 yard line, paired with Senior Eli Salvini who tacked on two of his own. Freshman quarterback Colin Sieg punched one in from two yards out, Landon Trnavsky and Tyler Wolfe added one each as well.
The game started with Avella possession, but a crucial 3rd down loss forced by Joshua Silveira stopped Avella for one of the many times in the game.
Fort Cherry methodical drove down the field, ended with a touchdown score on a stretch play to Huey to make it 7-0.
Fort Cherry would double their advantage on another Huey score, driving the length of the field to make it 15-0 after a lobbed pass found a Fort Cherry player for an unlikely two point conversion.
After the first quarter, Fort Cherry continued to pile it on, a score from Sieg on a rollout keeper, a forced fumble that turned into Salvini’s first touchdown, then Trnavsky all scored in quick succession.
Salvini would then go coast to coast with a crossfield touchdown run to make it 43-0, then Wolfe would get the final score in the waning seconds of the half to finish at 50-0 into halftime.
Avella would only muster a single touchdown in the second half against Fort Cherry’s second string defense, as a botched punt left the Eagles with prime field position. A slow drive led to a Chas Rush one yard tush push that would be Avella last significant drive.
Fort Cherry would drain out the remainder of regulation, ending 50-6 for another dominant Rangers victory over the Eagles in WPIAL playoffs.
Fort Cherry advances to the quarterfinals, going up against Laurel, the team that knocked the Rangers out in last year’s semifinal, 24-14. That marquee matchup will play next Friday at 7 pm.
