On Wednesday night on the blue turf at Alden Sports Park, the Akron Tigers dominated en route to their final decisive victory of the delayed 2020-21 spring football season. The Tigers opened up the first frame with three scores and captured a turnover on their way to a 21-0 lead. Reminiscent of a 22-0 lead just a few days prior at Wilson.
Adam Mietz connected on a 14 yard pass to Mitchell Holtz to open the scoring. Then Aiden Smith and Adam Mietz’ feet accounted for the next two on 8 and 20 yard runs, respectively. Mietz would account for three scores on the ground, running it in from 46 and 7 yards out. Aidan Smith would add to his tally, with a 33 yard run in the second quarter as well.
With a 27-0 lead at the break, a light rain started that continued through the early parts of the third quarter. After the final score of the game, Mietz’ 7 yard run with 1:00 left in the third, the rest of the game went smoothly and quickly as the Tigers defense worked on securing their second straight shutout. Akron would win, 39-0, to secure their consolation Chuck Funke Bowl title.
