Last night I made my first visit to Marion Harding high school since the 90’s to watch a high school football playoff game. East Knox 12-0 was set to battle Carey 7-5, in a round three playoff game. East Knox is led by Caleb Gallwitz, who ran for 2,253 yards and 41 touchdowns during the regular season and quarterback Kadden Lester threw for 1,639 yards with 20 touchdowns. Carey quarterback Ethan Beringer has thrown for 1,445 yards and seven touchdowns and had also run for 664 yards. Also for Carey Cade Crawford has 42 receptions, 531 yards and five touchdowns.
The first quarter would see Luke Grosscup sack Beringer for a 5 yard loss, with 9:19 left in the opening quarter as the defense would dominate most of the quarter. East Knox would convert a 4th and seven, when Cade Leach made a catch down to the Carey 6 yard line to set up first and goal, with 2:51 left on the clock, From there Gallwitz used the work of the Bulldogs front line to waltz in from a yard out, after the point after we had ourselves a 7-0 East Knox lead, with 2:31 left in the quarter.
Beringer would scramble for a 12 yard pick up to give Carey a much needed first down, at the 9:18 mark of the 2nd quarter. From there the quarter would wind down quickly, without much happening on the offensive side of things. At the 4:45 mark Beringer would again showcase his running ability with a 16 yard gain. That play help set up a 2 yard run touchdown by Connor Williams. Anthony Bell made good on the PAT to lock this one up at seven, with 2:03 left in the quarter. After getting the ball back Carey got a long catch by Bryce Conti to set up a 1 yard touchdown run by Reece Billock, after the PAT Carey led 14-7, with :09 seconds left in the half.
The Blue Devils would get a 16 yard catch by Cade Crawford that took the ball all the way down to the East Knox 11 yard line, with 8:57 left in the third quarter. A short time after the big catch, Beringer used his legs to score from 5 yards out. The PAT from Bell made this a 21-7 game, with 7:19 left in the quarter. East Knox would go 63 yards in just 5 plays to make this a 21-14 game. The touchdown by Weston Melick was set up by a long pass to Gallwitz. After the PAT the scoreboard read 21 Carey 14 East Knox. The Bulldogs would get a nice punt return by Gallwitz to set the offense with first and goal from the 8 yard line, with 2:37 left. Gallwitz would score :37 later on a 9 yard run to make this a 21-20 game. Dawson David would get to the Blue Devils full back, Connor Williams for a 1 yard loss, with 1:37 left in the quarter. Then with :16 seconds left on the clock Gage Steinmetz would get an interception to set up the East Knox offense again. The last play of the exciting quarter would be a 63 yard touchdown catch by Gallwitz on a beautiful pass thrown by Lester, to make this a 26-21 game.
Carey had a touchdown run by Beringer called back on a hold, with a little over six minutes left in the game. From there the Blue Devils would never recover and turn the ball over on downs. East Knox would get the play of the game, when Gallwitz caught a fumble off of Lester hands, then took it to the house from 75 yards out. As impressive as the run was, what impressed me more was the field vision the kid seem to show. It looked like he was already looking downfield before he caught the fumble and from there he seemed to be two moves ahead of the defense. The PAT was missed again, but the Bulldogs had a 32-21 lead, with 4:15 left in the game. East Knox put the final nail in the Carey coffin, when Steinmetz picked off a pass, with 2:00 left in the game.
