Yesterday afternoon I made my way to Union Local high school in Belmont, Ohio to watch the Jets play hose to Martins Ferry. The Jets come in 1-0, while Marins Ferry limped in with an 0-2 record. The crowd for this one was of good size. I’d say if everyone was setting in a seat the stands would have been 90% full.
Martins Ferry jumped out to the 8-0 lead on a Hayden McCrate 10-yard touchdown run and a two-point conversion. The Jets used a Caleb McWhorter kickoff return that placed the ball inside the five-yard line of Martins Ferry. The Jets would get a short touchdown run and then a two-point conversion from Carter Blake.
Ayden Ludolph would power in from five and then he would show even more power to convert another two-point run making this a 16-8 game with a little of four minutes left in the action-packed opening quarter.
Blake to Dakota Hess with the result being a 24-yard Touchdown. BLAKE would retie this one with another 2pt conversion run with 2:15 left in the first half. Martins Ferry would retake the lead when Matthew Fox scooped up a fumble on a botched punt return by the Jets with a little under a minute left in the half.
BLake would find McWhorter for a 4yd touchdown. Blake gave the Jets the 23-22 lead with his point-after kick to bring us to halftime.
Haden McCrate would break two weak tackles attempt by the Purple Riders on his way to a 27-yard score. Blake made this a 30-22 game with another point-after kick.
Ethan Blinco would score the last points of the game to give us our 30-28 final.
Ferry came within inches of winning this one but a fumble as the ball carrier was getting ready to cross the goal line took that away from them.
