Last night I made my way back to Wheelersburg, Ohio not only to watch the Pirates host Russell out of Kentucky but to see two of my good friends, Bill and Joe, who I met a few years back when the Pirates played at heath High School. The crowd in this was very good I’d estimate that the stadium was nearly 90% full and for the most part they were into this one up until the end.

Young Bryson Stamper would complete a bubble screen to Josh Clark that ended in a gain of 25-yards. The Red Devils defense responded with a tackle for loss by Braden Cook on Stamper. Stamper would have a receiver open at the 9:05 mark of the quarter but he would underthrow him making for an easy pick by Carson Patrick. The scoreless opening quarter would give us one more big play and that came in the shape of a 21-yard run from Ethan Glover.

Just six seconds into the 2nd quarter Stamper found Eric Lattimore at the 18-yard line after making the catch the speed burner Lattimore made a move and sprinted to the end zone for the touchdown. Braxton Sammons, who has a D-1 college type of leg made this a 7-0 game.

The Burg defense would get a nice play from Jake Darling, who got to Doug Oborne for a short loss to put the Red Devils into a third and 32 predicament. After getting the ball back the Pirates used a 13-yard run by Glover to get the ball to the Red Devils 15-yard line. After getting the ball down to the three Carson Williams took the handoff and scored to make this a 14-0 game, after the Point after kick was made.

The Burg almost had a long gain on a pass from Stamper to Clark but a chop block was called on the Pirates to take away the gain. The Red Devils defense would dodge the bullet but not for long because Stamper threw a short pass to Eric Lattimore, who used two stop and go-like moves to score on a play that total 62-yards. The two teams would head to the locker rooms with the Burg up 21-0.

The Burg would start the 2nd half off by working to perfection an on-side kick with Jake Darling coming up with the ball. Williams would pick up 14-yards on a nice run then a few moments later he would score from 4-yards out as the lead grew to 28-0, with 9:10 left on the clock.

The Burg defense quickly shut down the Red Devils offense and all of those around me were thinking punt score on the ensuing drive and the running clock rule would be put into play. The punt did take place but Casey Doerr muffed it and the Red Devils Andre Richardson-Crews pounced on the ball. Russell would have to settle for a 38-yard field goal on the ensuing drive off of the foot of Nathan Totten giving us a 28-3 game. The Russell kick-off team would come up with the football when D’Marques Kershner came up with the football. Bradley Rose would connect with Mason Lykins for a pick-up of nineteen. The Red Devils offense would, later on, the drive decide to go for it on fourth and two but it was the Pirates defense would come up big when Beau Castaneda stoped the 6-4,240 pound Rose short of the first down line.

The fourth quarter would see Russell get a 69 and 71-yard touchdown pass from Rose to Oborne and Carson Patrick. On both plays, the receivers were wide open. There were many times during this game where Russell had guys wide open but Rose was just off on his deeper throws if not for this, this game might have been much closer or gone the other way. Williams would pick up 33-yards to give the Burg fans more to cheer for, then he capped off the drive with a 19-yard touchdown run.

Final score 35-16 Burg.
