The WPIAL playoffs are here once again and teams are looking to win the WPIAL and also claim their spot in the state playoffs. All the action starts on Friday, November 6th. Both the Greater Latrobe Wildcats and the Trinity Hillers are hoping to win their opening matchup. The Hillers, the home team, come from Allegheny Six Conference. Trinity came out of their section in fourth place with a 2-3 record, and finished the regular season with a 5-5 record overall. On the other side, Greater Latrobe comes out of the Big East Conference. The Wildcats finished third in their conference with a 4-2 record and an overall record of 6-4.

The Trinity Hillers made the move up to 5A from 4A after winning their section last year. The Allegheny Six Conference has four of its teams hosting a playoff game this year. This includes Upper Saint Clair, who has a first round bye. The key wins for the Hillers this year come against Peters Township and Bethel Park. The Bethel Park win came in the last week of the regular season, but the convincing win by the Hillers gave them a good resume for the bracket makers. The Hillers also played tight games with Thomas Jefferson and West Allegheny. Those two losses came by a combined total of six points. Trinity is led by a pair of Owens. Quarterback Owen Samogala and Running Back Owen Gardner head up this Hillers offense and will be crucial to whether or not Trinity can get a playoff win.

The away team in this game, is the Greater Latrobe Wildcats. The Big East Conference’s fourth team in the playoffs is Gateway. That is at team that was only able to score seven points on this Wildcats defense. Latrobe’s biggest wins were also their key section wins. The Wildcats have had a single game this year end in a one possession difference. Their smallest loss was a ten point loss to the Norwin Knights in Week 2. Their closest win this year was a two point win to Franklin Regional. The key players for the Wildcats are QB Dom Scarton and RB AJ Yeboah.

The common opponent for these teams is Hempfield Area High School. Both teams took a loss in this game, and by more than twenty points. That being said, this should be a close and fun game to look forward to.

Kickoff will be at 7:00 from Trinity Middle School.
