Hanzely Picks Up First Win As DuBois Head Coach

Rob Hanzely notched his first career victory as the head coach of the DuBois Beavers Friday night. The Beavers bested their new rival, the Brockway Rovers, by a score of 34-18 at DuBois Mansell Stadium. The DuBois offensive output was led by quarterback Seth Wilmoth and running back Dalton Reasinger. Wilmoth threw for a couple of scores and Reasinger ran for a pair of TDs.
When asked how it felt to get his first win Hanzely said, “It wasn’t easy. That’s for darn sure. But we gutted it out and really battled there in the second half. All credit to our offensive line. We were pretty much calling the same play there and they took control of the game and really finished it off for us.”
That same play, an up the gut off tackle run, was instrumental in ball control for the Beavers especially in the third and fourth quarters. The pinnacle drive where that play was used happened after Brockway scored early in the 4th quarter to cut the DuBois lead to 20-12. The Beavers recovered an onside kick at their 49 and drove right down the field with that same play over and over, culminating in London Duncan’s one-yard touchdown to pretty much ice the game for DuBois.
Brockway was led by their all-state quarterback, Aiden Patton, who fired 3 touchdown passes to 3 different receivers. But, DuBois pressured him constantly throughout the contest. “We really made it tough on their quarterback,” stated Hanzely, “That’s a credit to our D-Line and our secondary.”
After a scoreless first period, DuBois opened the scoring when Wilmoth found Avion Bell on third down from 14 yards out. Maddox Barnes’ PAT put the home team up 7-0. Brockway answered by driving 77 yards and scoring on Patton’s first TD toss of the evening. But the extra point try hit the left upright squarely and bounced backward.
With two and half minutes remaining a strange sequence of plays resulted in DuBois eventually scoring with 6 seconds left in the half. First, Wilmoth was sacked for a 17-yard loss. Then on an incomplete pass, Brockway was flagged for a 15-yard personal foul. The Rovers sacked the DuBois QB on the next play but were hit with a 15-yard face mask penalty. Two plays later DuBois scored when Wilmoth threw a nice pass where only his receiver, Hayat Muhammad, could grab it. And grab it he did. DuBois led at halftime 13-6.

Reasinger scored his first touchdown of the night on the opening possession of the second half when he scurried for 23 yards. After a punt by each team Brockway mounted a scoring drive that ended on Patton’s pitch to Kyle Kennedy, who amazingly stayed on his feet after being hit, and continued into the end zone for a 36-yard touchdown. That made the score 20-12 early in the fourth quarter.
Duncan’s score made it 27-12 DuBois and then Patton’s third TD pass of the night closed the gap to 27-18. Finally, after a couple of turnovers, one by each team, Reasinger added the last TD of the game on a 1-yard plunge.
“Brockway did some nice things,” said Hanzely, “they showed some grit. They really challenged us. But I’m proud of our defense for staying composed and making plays when they had to.”

Overall, the game was sloppy from the standpoint of so many 10 and 15-yard penalties. Brockway helped the DuBois cause and hurt their own on numerous occasions with ill-advised penalties. DuBois was flagged too, but in most cases did not hurt them as much. “”This is back to back weeks where we were getting really frustrated,” stated Hanzely, “we addressed that at halftime.”
DuBois is now 1-1 on the young season and will host Central Clarion next week, who is also 1-1. Meanwhile, Brockway fell to 0-2, and will be at home for a game with 1-1 St. Marys next Friday.
