Hickory Races Past Sharon, 40-21

Hermitage – Hickory pounded out 310 rushing yards and knocked off Sharon 40-21 Saturday night at Hornet Stadium.

Over the past seasons and certainly in the playoffs, Hickory and Sharon have had a flair for the dramatic. This includes three consecutive District 10 finals decided by eight points or fewer. Saturday night was different.

The Hornets’ Big 3 of Kelvin Morrison, Jadon Phillips, and Christian Dungee had a hand in all six Hickory scores as they erased an early deficit en route to victory.

“This was a huge game,” said Hickory head coach Bill Dungee. “I think I lost ten pounds this week because you don’t want to fall to 0-2 overall and 0-1 in the region knowing you have to go to Grove City next week. Our preparation was dead on, and the guys were locked in. We talked about how last week we were down 7-6 in the fourth quarter with the ball and let them (Westinghouse) off the hook. It’s like Mortal Kombat: you stun them; you need to finish your move. We did that tonight.”

For Morrison and the offense, their performance couldn’t have come at a better time. A week ago against a formidable foe in City League powerhouse Westinghouse, Morrison was limited to only 10 yards on 13 carries with a lost fumble.

Saturday, he returned to form in a major way, rushing for 222 yards on 15 carries, including 163 yards in the first half on seven attempts, scoring twice.

On just his touch of the football game, he ran 79 yards for a touchdown. Following a fumble recovery. The Hornets went ahead for good when Phillips hauled in a 21-yard touchdown pass from Dungee.

Phillips, a Kent State recruit who had a season-ending injury against Sharon last season, finished the night with four catches for 41 yards.

The Tigers took the early lead when they drove 59 yards in ten plays, scoring on a 4-yard touchdown run by Cassius Hosey.

Hickory extended the lead on the snap of the second quarter when Morrison took an option pitch from Dungee and ran 47 yards to the house, putting them ahead 18-7.

Marius Best, who also had a big night on the ground, rushing for 135 yards on 24 carries, pulled the Tigers to within 18-15 when he scored on a 16-yard run, capping a 10-play, 71-yard drive.

Completing a perfect first half offensively, Dungee threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to Dante Evans with 30 seconds remaining in the half. The Hornet offense scored on all four first-half possessions.

“It’s about executing in those key situations, and we did a much better job of that today,” Bill Dungee said. “Last week there were a lot of 3rd and 4th downs we didn’t convert. Obviously, we have to keep getting better. It’s on me to make sure numbers 1,2, and 3 are touching the ball in the right situations. ”

Christian Dungee completed 7-of-11 passes for 46 yards, while rushing for 59 and accounting for three total touchdowns.

“These guys came to play right out of the gate,” Christian Dungee said. “We had a chip on our shoulder from the loss. We wanted to come out clicking tonight, and that’s what we did.”

Hickory put the game out of reach in the third quarter despite throwing an interception in the red zone on their opening drive. They put enough pressure on Gha’fir Lampkins, causing an illegal forward pass penalty to occur in the end zone for a safety, before Morrison capped off the ensuing drive with a 16-yard jaunt, putting them comfortably ahead at 34-14.

“Kelvin does what he does,” said Bill Dungee. “Him doing that and breaking those long runs got our confidence back. I’m really proud of these guys. It’s another big one for us next week against Grove City because they’re rolling.”

Lampkins would respond with a 2-yard run early in the fourth quarter, before Dungee put the exclamation point on the victory when he scrambled 23 yards to close the scoring.
