ROUNDTRIP – 455 MILES

Wednesday, October 7

Nearly halfway through the 16-week PIAA football season, we’re hitting our stride with league play across the Commonwealth…undefeated teams are dwindling, big-time matchups are on the schedule every week, and we discussed it all on this week’s STATE of PA Football Show!

Thursday, October 8

Having traveled the state extensively to attend high school games, one of the bonuses is visiting some of the most beautiful areas Pennsylvania has to offer with football as a backdrop.  Without a doubt, the Endless Mountains Sports Complex in Towanda is a Top 10 for me in terms of stunning settings for high school football fields.  Full disclosure…I’m a Towanda High graduate…but the proof is in the picture, and I’d put this view against any in the state!

My hometown Black Knights were hosting Wellsboro and the visiting Hornets had Towanda’s number on this night as they raced out to a 14-0 first quarter advantage en route to a 16-7 victory.  Here’s a few highlights from Towanda vs. Wellsboro…

Special thanks to Towanda Athletic Director Jack Young for always making me feel welcome at a Black Knight football game and to the numerous coaches and friends I had a chance to catch up with while in town!

Friday, October 9

There are numerous towns in Pennsylvania, both big and small, where football still serves as the foundation in the community, and Solanco is certainly one of them.  Evidence of this takes little time to notice when entering the Quarryville area, and upon arriving at the stadium, it becomes even more apparent.  “Go Mules!” is the battle cry of the Solanco faithful, and their enthusiasm for the burro is embodied everywhere the eye can see, including what has to be one of the most unique entrances for a PA team as they run onto the field out of a massive inflatable Golden Mule!

On the field, undefeated Solanco was squaring off with also-undefeated Twin Valley, with the winner taking a firm grasp on the 5A classification in the Lebanon-Lancaster League.  These two District 3 teams last met in the 2023 season with Twin Valley prevailing in a dandy 29-28 contest.

While the Solanco defense would record interceptions on the first two Twin Valley drives and take an early 7-0 lead, it would be the Raiders that would come out on top in front of a hearty sell-out crowd.  Follow all the action with these Twin Valley vs. Solanco highlights…

Saturday, October 10

A doubleheader day got started at Lafayette College as 6A #5 state-ranked St. Joe’s Prep battled District 12 Philly Catholic League rival LaSalle in what has become one of the most intense rivalries in the state.  LaSalle broke through the Prep 6A state-title stranglehold last year, notching one of their own, and fans have had this game circled on their calendars since the two teams faced off in the PCL playoffs last season.

In a low-scoring affair, St. Joe’s Prep would get the best of LaSalle with a 13-3 victory over their PCL foes.  The Prep defense was stingy all day, and a couple field goals paired with a lengthy TD drive, was all the nine-time PA state football champs needed to secure the win.

Here’s some highlights from St. Joe’s Prep vs. LaSalle…

Game 4 of 4 on my week brought me to Fleetwood where the Tigers were hosting Warwick in a District 3 matchup.  While Warwick entered the game winless at 0-6 the visiting Warriors played a spirited game en route to their first victory on the season in a 31-17 final tally.  Warwick signal-caller Colin McGaw tossed three TD tallies on the night to lead his Warriors to the win.  Here’s some highlights from the Warwick vs. Fleetwood game…

With 24 games of PA high school football games attended and more than 2000 miles traveled this season, I wrapped up my seventh of 16 weeks and headed home to plan for next week’s schedule of contests.

Follow along next week as Travelin’ Matt takes you across the state on another PA High School Football journey.
