I kicked off Week 3 with my first game in District 1 this season as Pope John Paul II hosted West Chester Rustin in a matchup of two programs highly-regarded in their respective classes.  Rustin brought their run-heavy attack up against PJP’s more diverse offense and on this night it was the home squad that would put together a solid game in all three phases en route to a 26-14 victory.

Friday, September 11

Football is many things to many people, but on the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on our country…football fittingly becomes the backdrop for numerous proper remembrances for those lost on that fateful day more than two decades prior.  Please take a moment to view some pre-game video from Bishop McDevitt High School as their team paid homage to so many affected by the events of 9/11/01.

 

As for the game on this patriotic evening, 6A #4 state-ranked Bishop McDevitt hosted 6A #5 state-ranked State College in a District 3 battle in the Mid Penn Conference.  The visiting Little Lions would control the trenches and the clock while posting a hotly-contested 27-20 win to stay undefeated on the season.  State College pieced together three lengthy TD drives on 6, 6 and 9+ minutes in addition to bleeding out the final 4:59 of the game on offense for the win.

Saturday, September 12

A doubleheader of games on Saturday took me from Northumberland County to Berks County to Lycoming County and from morning sun to afternoon clouds and eventually evening rain!

What better way to start a Saturday two-gamer than an afternoon contest at Bob Wolfrum Field at Wyomissing High School?  For my money, there’s no better Saturday day game setting than that of the natural-grass gridiron that exists at Wyomissing High.  From the freshly-lined playing field to the NFL films-style soundtrack played during pre-game to the old-timey white and blue winged design of the hometown Spartan helmets…I’d put a Saturday game at Wyomissing up against any other day game environment in the state!

While Wyomissing fans enjoyed their pre-game activities visiting Twin Valley would spoil their day with a dominating performance from last season’s 4A State Final participant.  While Wyomissing would score first in this contest, Twin Valley ripped off 42 straight points to capture a 42-14 win.

Kudos to Twin Valley Head Coach Brett Myers, who is one of the very best in the state at building solid and successful football programs.  For those not in the know, Coach Myers guided Middletown High School to three consecutive State Finals in addition to Twin Valley last year, and his squads are some of the most prepared across the Commonwealth, always noted for their toughness and max effort.  A visit to Coach Myers page on X speaks volumes to the way he leads his players into battle as he notes a famous Teddy Roosevelt quote from “The Man in the Arena” in the header…

Having made my way through three games on the weekend and the top four classes of PA football, I took the two-hour route from Wyomissing to Montgomery to close out a quadrupleheader of games over three days.  While my first three contests covered the four highest of six football classes in the state, my final game featured 2A South Williamsport taking on 1A Montgomery in a non-conference battle of District 4 teams.

One of my favorite aspects of covering high school football across the state is the stark contrast between attending a large stadium 6A game versus rolling into a small hometown 1A competition.  Montgomery is the quintessential example of the latter, and if Wikipedia correctly lists its population as 1,568 it seemed as if every inhabitant of the hamlet was at the game that night in a town that spans just a half mile of land.  While the school proudly boasts some of the best wrestlers in the state (both male and female) on this night the football team brought Red Raider fans to their feet with a hard-fought 12-6 win against South Williamsport on a soggy night in Lycoming County.

A magnificent weekend of PA high school football games complete, I wrapped up my third of 16 weeks and headed home to plan for next week’s schedule of contests.  Stay tuned next week for some bonus football on Tuesday!
