Imhotep Runs Away From Camden 29-8 In Out Of State Battle

PHILADELPHIA – For most of the first half, Imhotep struggled to finish drives, entering halftime with only one touchdown on the board. That all changed in the second half, as Imhotep was able to run away with the game, scoring three touchdowns in the second half, en route to a 29-8 victory over Camden.

Imhotep Charter is no stranger to out of state opponents, however this was their first time matching up against Camden, who won New Jersey’s state title in 2025. Early on in the game, it was Camden’s rushing attack that was working very well for the Panthers. Roman Duckett and Jayden Boyce were getting big carry after big carry, without much push back from Imhotep’s defense.

Their defense was able to show up when it mattered most though, as Camden’s opening drive that made it all the way inside the 10 yard line was halted by an interception from cornerback Malik Drayton. Drayton, who had moved from safety to cornerback this fall, ended up getting three interceptions on the night.

Imhotep’s defense also came up with another takeaway on the very next drive, getting a strip sack on sophomore quarterback Greg Wyche. That strip sack led to Imhotep’s first touchdown of the evening, a 27 yard connection from Joe McLeish to Brian Culmer.

It didn’t take long for Camden to answer, as early on in the second quarter Greg Wyche connected with sophomore wide receiver Yusuf Williams in the corner in the end zone. Jayden Boyce ran it in out of the Wildcat for the two point conversion for Camden, giving the Panthers an 8-7 lead.

“Defensively we were giving up big third downs, we weren’t doing well against the run early on,” Imhotep Head Coach Devon Johnson said about their defensive performance in the first half.

The problem for Imhotep in the first half wasn’t that they couldn’t move the ball, it was more so their inability to finish drives. That changed for the Panthers in the second half. Kassan Chappelle and Yazid McCorkle both scored a rushing touchdown in the third quarter, with McCorkle also scoring on a two point conversion.

“We’ve got two really good running backs that can really just go,” Coach Johnson said about the rushing attack. “We just needed to stay with the run game. A lot of times when you don’t have success with it early, you kind of go away from it. We know that in order to win in December you’ve got to be able to run the ball.”

McCorkle also scored his second touchdown of the game in the fourth quarter, that was ultimately the final blow in a 29-8 victory for the Panthers. McCorkle ended up being the star of Imhotep’s second half rushing attack. “I feel like my quarterback was the biggest key for me, he made a couple good checks for me today, and we wound up scoring touchdowns off of those checks,” McCorkle said when asked what the biggest key to his success was.

That rushing offense that was working so well for Camden in the first half was almost completely neutralized in the second half, which kept them off of the scoreboard the rest of the way. “We just started executing in the second half, it wasn’t a whole lot of adjustments,” Coach Johnson said about the changes that were made at halftime. “We just were telling the guys to relax and execute the gameplan that we already had.”

Imhotep begins their 2026 campaign 1-0 with the victory over Camden, next week they will welcome to town DeMatha Catholic.
