Indiana Defeats Albert Gallatin 25-14

On a beautiful night for football, the Little Indians of Indiana used a balanced offense and a stingy defense to get the best of Albert Gallatin’s Colonials 25-14 at Andy Kuzneski Field in Indiana.
Indiana was led by their media’s player of the game, Jace Brocious, who scored three of his team’s four touchdowns. Brocious caught a pair of touchdown passes from quarterback Jason Strack and he scored another TD on a 21-yard run.
Normally a flexbone team, Indiana’s head coach, Mark Zilinskas and his staff saw some openings for aerial fireworks as the game wore on. And that was one of the big differences in the game. Although Strack missed on his first three passes, he connected on 11 of the next 14 for 170 yards and the two scoring strikes to Brocious on slants/seam routes over the middle.
Another difference in the game was Indiana’s aggressive defense. They, Darius Webb in particular, blocked a punt to set up Indiana’s first score. The Indian ‘D’ also forced a couple turnovers, a fumble recovered by Webb and an interception by Lincoln Cramer that led to another Indiana touchdown. They held Gallatin to 246 total yards and 104 of that came on the Colonials two touchdown runs.

Gallatin’s defense came up big on Indiana’s opening drive by stopping the home team on downs at the Colonial 4-yard line. But the visitors could not get a first down and had to punt. That is when Webb, the 6’4” senior, broke through the line and partially blocked the punt giving Indiana field position at the AG 22-yard line.
After a run of two yards, a 10-yard penalty, and two incomplete passes, Coach Zilinskas tossed the dice on 4th and 18 and went for it. Strack hit an open Brocious over the middle with a near perfect pass for the 30-yard touchdown.
Trailing 6-0, Albert Gallatin answered with a 6-play, 68-yard scoring drive. The speedy Bentley Swaney, who had ripped off a 12 -yard gain earlier in the drive, got outside and raced 33 yards to the end zone to tie the game. Eli Fisher’s PAT put the Colonials in front 7-6. That would be the only time they led in the game.
The Little Indians scored on their next two possessions to give themselves an 18-7 cushion at halftime. They pieced together an excellent drive after losing a yard on the first play. Going 65 yards on just five plays, the Indians regained the lead for good. Brocious did the honors again, scoring his second TD, this time on a running play. He took a pitch from Starck and wove his way to paydirt. That put Indiana up 12-7 after a failed 2-point attempt.
On the Colonials’ next drive, the Indians’ Lincoln Cramer intercepted a pass and his return of 30 yards gave Indiana possession at the Gallatin 34. It took all of three plays for the Little Indians to up their advantage to 18-7. Strack topped it off by scampering 14 yards for the score. 18-7 was the score at the intermission.
On the second play of the second half, Swaney got outside again, and outran the Indiana defense to score on a 71-yard run. With 11:01 left in the 3rd quarter Albert Gallatin pulled to within four points and the Colonials seemed to have the momentum.
On Indiana’s next two possessions they went three and out, then fumbled the ball away at their own 41 when AG’s Tremayne Spillman made the recovery. This is where the game changed and the momentum switched back to Indiana.
With the ball at Indiana’s 41 and poised to take the lead, Albert Gallatin got nowhere as the Indiana defense pushed the Colonials back a yard in three plays forcing a punt.
Indiana then, for all intents and purposes, put the game away when they drove 92 yards on just seven snaps. Strack to Brocious covered the last 18 yards and Deion Simmons’ PAT made it 25-14. For the game, Brocious grabbed 4 passes for 80 yards and the two scores.
Late in the game, Indiana’s Charles Spells had his 34-yard touchdown called back due to holding. And so the hard fought game ended with Indiana winning on homecoming night.
Notes: The Little Indians are now 5-0 lifetime against Albert Gallatin.
Indiana outgained Gallatin 414 yards to 246. Strack ran for 105 yards in addition to his 170 yards passing. He accounted for three touchdowns also, throwing for two and rushing for the other.
Albert Gallatin’s leading rusher was Swaney who had 127 yards on 9 carries. Their 6’1” 220 pound running back, Roman Smith, bulled his way for 69 yards on 14 totes.
Indiana’s band put on a really good halftime show. Bands have been a part of high school football for a long time, with good ones really enhancing the atmosphere and the experience.
Indiana upped their record to 2-3, while Albert Gallatin dropped to 2-3. Indiana travels to Hampton (3-2) next week, and Albert Gallatin has a date at Uniontown (3-2).
