Jeckell runs wild as Crestwood starts off with an opening night win over Hanover Area

Jake Jeckell gave all the credit for his performance on the ground to his offensive line. The senior rushed for 263 yards and a touchdown as the Comets started the season 1-0 with a 22-6 victory over Hanover Area. “Jake’s a tough kid” Said Crestwood head coach Ryan Arcangeli of his running back. “I’d be the first guy to tell you that his line and his fullback did well today but he did things on his own tonight and I’m proud of him.”
On the opening kickoff, Kyle Schade gave the Comets good field position to the Hawkeye 38 yard line. Crestwood drove down the field all the way to the 9 yard line but ended up turning the ball over on downs. Hanover Area got one first down on their opening drive but were forced to punt. On the first play of the drive, Jack Rodgers found Logan Lawson for 43 yard touchdown and a 6-0 Comets lead with 3:42 remaining in the first quarter.
The Hawkeyes drove down the field, highlighted by Logan Richardson finding Luke Willis for 36 yards into Crestwood territory. At the start of the second quarter, Dewayne Downey got a 12 yard gain for a first and goal at the four yard line. The Comet defense forced a Hawkeye field goal attempt. The field goal attempt was no good.
Jeckell got gains of 28 and 32 as Crestwood had a first and goal at the six yard line. However, a fumble ended the drive. Hanover Area went three and out and, on the punt, Carson Oresick blocked itand the ball went out of the end zone to give the Comets the safety and an 8-0 lead with 6:24 remaining until halftime. Crestwood got the ball after the safety and looked to increase their lead. A fumble, however, ended their drive. The Hawkeyes took over with 1:36 left but ran out the clock to make it 8-0 Crestwood at halftime.
Hanover Area started the second half in great field position at the 50 yard line. However, the Hawkeyes didn’t capitalize and had a turnover on downs. After a Comets three and out, Hanover Area got the ball at the Crestwood 36 yard line. The drive took four plays as Downey scored from one yard out, the drive was highlighted by Logan Richardson going to Angel Tejada for a 33 yard catch. The Hawkeyes went for the two point conversation and they were unsuccessful as Crestwood still lead 8-6 with 5:23 remaining in the third quarter.
Hanover Area looked like they got a three and over but an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty continued the drive and on the very nice play, Jeckell went 60 yards for a 15-6 lead with 3:25 remaining in the third quarter. The Comets scored one more time as Jack Rodgers scored from 28 yards out to make it 22-6 with 7:55 remaining. The Hawkeyes last chance was intercepted by Teddy Taylor and Crestwood went to 1-0 with a 22-6 victory over Hanover Area. Crestwood hosts Valley View next week. The Hawkeyes travel to Wyoming Area.
