Late Surge Seals the Win for Spring Grove

TALE OF TWO HALVES
Spring Grove – Last night the Garden Spot Spartans took on the Spring Grove Rockets at Papermakers Stadium. The battle, ultimately ending in Spring Grove’s favor 17-10 can be described as a tale of two halves.
Garden Spot kicked off the scoring today with a breakaway touchdown run late in the 2nd quarter, giving the Spartans the early 7-0 lead.
On their next drive the Spartans moved down field before being stopped in Spring Grove’s territory. The settled for a field goal, making the score: Garden Spot 10, Spring Grove 0, going into halftime.
Coming out of halftime the Rockets flipped the script. Early in the third quarter sophomore running back Kade Gibbs rushed for a touchdown, cutting down Garden Spot’s lead to only 3. Gibbs finished the day with 12 carries and 84 yards.
On Spring Grove’s next drive they meticulously drove down the field led by quarterback Davon Melbourne. They settled for 3 kicking a field goal, tying the score up at 10-10.
After an unsuccessful first drive by Garden Spot in the 4th quarter, Spring Grove drove down the field. Sophomore running back Brody Redding found the end-zone, giving the Rockets the winning lead, 17-10. Redding finished the day with 15 carries and 70 yards.
Defensively Garden Spot has successfully shut out Spring Grove in the 1st half. The 2nd half saw different results, with the Rockets defense finding their rhythm and holding the Spartans scoreless. Spring Grove’s senior defensive end, Tayshawn Fisher sealed the game with a fumble recovery late in the 4th, stopping the potential score by the Spartans.
“It was a tale of two halves,” Spring Grove coach Tom Trone explained. “The first half we didn’t block and tackle well, the second half we did. That’s what ultimately led to the rushing touchdowns and the defense holding up, and the guys playing in the second half leading us to victory.”

Spring Grove now 2-0 on the season will travel up to play Milton Hershey on September 11th, hopeful for another victory.
