Edinboro – Maplewood won its first postseason game since 2022, defeating Cambridge Springs 15-9.

The last time the Tigers won a playoff game was a 33-24 victory over Lakview at Farrell High School on November 5th, 2022.

On Saturday night, it felt worth the wait as the Tigers turned the tables from a September 18th, 25-16  loss to the Blue Devils.

“The first time around we didn’t play as well as we had hoped,” said Maplewood head coach Rob Finkbeiner. “This was redemption for the guys. We told them we knew they could do it, and they played a heck of a football game.”

The Tigers scored the first 15 points of th e game, then relied on their stingy defense to hold off a late Cambridge Springs rally.

Maplewood opened the scoring after receiving the kickoff, driving 65 yards in 12 plays and eating up over six minutes of clock when Gavin Reynolds scored on a 3-yard touchdown run off a reverse handoff.

The Blue Devils drove 44 yards in 15 plays on their opening drive, but quarterback Dale Smith threw an incomplete pass on 4th-and-16 at the Tigers’ 26-yard line.

The Tigers then extended their lead to 15-0 by marching 74 yards in six plays, largely thanks to Mason Potosky’s 40-yard gain.

“Our execution was the key in this game,” Finkbeiner said. “We limited our mistakes compared to most games this season. Our defense was outstanding, tackled well, and it was just a great overall effort. Offensively, we did just enough.”

Kyle Jordan made an outstanding catch in the corner of the end zone for a 7-yard score off a Ty Neely pass.

For seniors like Jordan, the playoff victory validates years of hard work and an entire offseason of motivation following last year’s 1-8 record.

“It was hard last year,” he said. “But we knew we had to work harder and with each other. We built a stronger team connection, and our mindset was completely different coming into this season. We were more of a team this time. We lined up much better, and our coaches put together an awesome defensive game plan. We executed the way we needed to this time. On that touchdown, I had never made a catch like that in my life before, so it was awesome.”

Cambridge Springs got on the scoreboard late in the first half thanks to some last-minute heroics. Colton Hoover caught a 42-yard pass from Dale Smith with under a minute to play before Smith tossed a 10-yard touchdown pass to Matt Ross.

Maplewood led 15-6 at intermission.

Everett Moraski booted a 37-yard field goal for the Blue Devils in the third quarter, which became the final score of the evening, as Cambridge Springs drew within 15-9 following the second half’s opening drive.

Early in the fourth quarter, Cambridge Springs drove 61 yards, but Moraski missed a 29-yard field goal with just under ten minutes to play.

The Blue Devils got one more shot, but Smith was sacked on a 6-yard loss at the Tigers’ 44-yard line with 4:14 remaining.

From there, Maplewood ran out the clock thanks to Jordan, who had 32- and 20-yard runs on the drive and finished the night with a game-high 108 yards on 14 carries. Mason Potosky added 86 yards on 14 rushes.

Wyatt Keem led Cambridge Springs with 101 yards on 22 carries, while Dale Smith completed 8 of 13 passes for 151 yards and a touchdown, with Colton Hoover catching three passes for 80 yards.

The Blue Devils finish at 9-2, while Maplewood advances to face Mercyhurst Prep in the semifinals. The Lakers beat the Tigers 56-13 on October 2nd.
