Cambridge Springs – Mercyhurst Prep overcame a slow start to capture its fourth straight region title.
Heading into Saturday night, the previously unbeaten Blue Devils and the 6-2 Lakers faced off for the Region 2 title. Mercyhurst Prep rode Vinnie Feliciano’s legs to hand Cambridge Springs its first setback of 2026, 33-17.
“I want to give credit to Cambridge Springs; they’re a great program,” said Mercyhurst Prep head coach Jeff Root. “They did what they wanted to do by slowing the game down and keeping the ball out of our hands. In the second half, we had a little more athleticism, and Feliciano’s pretty tough to stop. We’re really proud of the kids for our fourth straight region championship.”
The Lakers’ senior standout and Erie County’s all-time leading rusher ran for a game-high 326 yards and four touchdowns on 22 carries, continuing his climb up the District 10 all-time rushing list.
Though the game didn’t start as the Lakers planned, one special teams play late in the first half turned the tide.
The Blue Devils’ spirited performance continued deep into the second quarter when they capped a 7-play, 51-yard drive with Everett Moraski’s 36-yard field goal with five seconds left in the half, pulling the Devils within 14-10.
With no time remaining in the half, Eyon Ellman-Sparks returned the ensuing kickoff 84 yards for a touchdown, giving the Lakers some breathing room heading into the locker room up 20-10.
“Eyon has done that all year; I think it’s his fourth one,” Root said. “They put it in the corner, and he took it; he’s got speed too. That turned the game in my opinion.”
Cambridge Springs capitalized on a muffed kickoff to start at the Lakers’ 43-yard line and took an early lead when Kaydin McFarren scored on a 15-yard run.

Mercyhurst overcame that error, as well as a red-zone fumble early in the second stanza, to take a 14-7 lead when Feliciano scored on a 90-yard run late in the first quarter, then added a 65-yard scamper with 2:43 to play in the half before the half’s closing dramatics.
On their second-half opening drive, Feliciano doubled down with another 65-yard sprint.
“I trusted my coaching, and my guys up front,” Feliciano said. “When we face adversity, we come around in clutch moments. When we’re facing those moments, I tell my guys in the huddle all I need is one good block, and they took me to the promised land.”
The Lakers then slowed the pace, marching down the field on a methodical 14-play, 82-yard drive, capped by Feliciano’s 3-yard scoring run with 9:30 to play to put the Lakers up 33-10.

“My last four years here, we won region championships,” Feliciano said. “I feel like I play a big role in that part.”
The Blue Devils closed the scoring on Dale Smith’s 13-yard touchdown pass to Matthew Sheldon.
Mercyhurst Prep will now end the season by taking on Conneaut before heading into the playoffs.
“They’re running like a machine, and nothing is bothering them,” concluded Root. “We’re putting out points, and not worrying about what’s going on around them. These kids don’t get down on each other. They’ve done a great job all year. We’re going to enjoy it for a day or two and get ready for Conneaut next week.”
