Poland – Broc Lowry accounted for 250 yards of total offense and three touchdowns as Canfield knocked off their rival Poland Seminary 24-12 Friday night in Poland.

As the 2021 football season got underway in Ohio, I decided to be part of our popular Beyond the Keystone coverage, covering games and high schools outside of Pennsylvania.

Let me tell you, Poland Seminary has a great facility, and it is absolutely worth seeing a game there.

Poland Seminary and Canfield have an enrollment that would be equivalent to a 5A school in Pennsylvania.

Speaking of the game, I didn’t know much about either school other than the fact that this is a big rivalry game, the Battle of Route 224, as they call it. The game itself certainly didn’t disappoint.

The Bulldogs (Poland Seminary) took the opening kickoff following a touchback and ate up over eight minutes of the first quarter.

The Canfield defense stood tall despite facing third-and-goal at their 1-yard line. Wyatt Bobbey came on scored the first points of the new season with a 25-yard field goal.

The Cardinals (Canfield) answered time on their second possession when Lowry rolled out to the right and hit a wide-open Gavin Ramun from 27 yards out, putting Canfield in front 7-3 with 7:25 to play in the first half.

Late in the first half, Poland was able to drive down the field and pull to within a point on Bobby’s second field goal of the night.

Bulldogs quarterback Jack Fulton did most of the damage on both Poland scoring drives. Though he threw only for 23 yards in the first half, Fulton rushed for 81 yards on 11 carries, including a 32-yard scramble on the game’s opening drive.

Perhaps what Fulton, Lowry did even better.

Canfield was left with only 50 seconds on the first-half clock, but Lowry drove the Cardinals from their 42-yard line to Bulldogs 11-yard line, where Ben Pugh hit a 28-yard field goal as time expired, extending the Cardinals lead to 10-6.

Lowry was 9-for-9 passing in the first half.

Poland had an excellent opportunity to seize momentum in the second half when Canfield gambled on fourth-and-one at their 47-yard line.

Christian Colosimo stuffed Paolo Papalia for a 4-yard loss.

However, the Bulldogs could only gain one first down before Fulton’s fourth-down rush came up short of the sticks.

Canfield then went on a 78-yard drive capped off by Lowery’s 10-yard scramble.

Answering right back, Fulton connected with Ross Dedo for a 56-yard completion. Three plays later, Fulton connected with Dom Park for an 11-yard touchdown pass.

The two-point conversion was unsuccessful, with the Cardinals holding a 17-12 lead 1:27 to play in the third quarter.

Canfield then went on the drive on the night, marching 82 yards and taking nearly 11 minutes off the clock.

Faced with w=a fourth-and-goal from the 2-yard line, Lowry kept himself off left tackle for the game-clinching score.

Lowry rushed 21 times for 85 in the second half, including a pair of touchdowns. Drew Carrocce caught five passes for 70 yards, while Mike Crawford chipped in 27 yards rushing.

Jack Fulton led Poland with 96 yards rushing on 16 carries and going 7-for-18, passing for 97 yards and the touchdown.
