On Saturday evening, a doubleheader was played between the visiting Prairie Mustangs and host Briggsdale Falcons. But it wasn’t all football. With small schools, many times games are scheduled as doubleheaders. As basketball is held in Pennsylvania, with Varsity and Junior Varsity games held in one evening, small schools out west combine sports into one event.
For many six-man schools, volleyball serves as the twin bill. Around 4pm, in the gymnasium at Briggsdale High School, the Falcons and Mustangs took to the court for a game of volleyball. While at 7pm, outside on the athletic field, a football game was scheduled to take place.
As the crowd filed in, the teams practiced just as anywhere else. The crowd trickling in quickly as sights moved from volleyball to football. The two towns sits as neighbors, just 29 miles apart, along Route 14 in northern Colorado. A reality of the rural upper Plains, small towns may dot the landscape, but not much in between. No ‘rural’ schools you see in Pennsylvania, filling in the void between towns and their similarly named schools.
For six-man football, it may be smaller rosters and smaller formations, but it’s football between two schools. On a windy night playing a rivalry game. Briggsdale entered at 2-0, while Prairie was looking for their first win at 0-2.
Falcon Field sits on the edge of town, with endless prairie off to the east. Conveniently the direction of Prairie High School. A combination football/baseball field, the home stands sit along the first base line, a traditional football grandstand built into a knoll with a full pressbox.
