Atlanta Mays and Cherokee opened the eastern half of the country’s high school football season with a thud. The game was delayed as the 5:30pm kickoff came and went. Once the game started, Mays struggled with handling the ball on snaps, and Cherokee took two drives deep that led to field goal tries. First one was a 29-yarder for 3, and the second a 40-yarder that was wide left.
After that, it was almost all Cherokee. AJ Swann threw four touchdowns, all in the first half, as the Warriors staked a 38-6 halftime lead. Mays’ lone TD was a 22 yard TD catch by Saulamon Evans in the right corner of the endzone. Fighting with the defender for possession. The run to the left failed. And that would be the entirety of the scoring for Mays. In the lingering second half, Cherokee would add two touchdowns. One on the ground for 1 yard, and another by Swann’s protege, Tanner Savasir, who connected on a 26 yard toss.
Cherokee would win the first game of the 30th annual Corky Kell Classic, 52-6.
