Dr. Levine says that there will be no mandate to shut down fall sports

Today during a press conference to introduce the new tracking app, the question of the future of fall sports came up. When asked whether there would be a mandatory shut down if the PIAA goes forward with recommending fall sports during their scheduled meeting this Friday, state Health Secretary Dr. Rachel Levine said “The governor has been very clear about that: There are no plans to do that”.  Levine continued to support Wolf’s recommendation that sports be shut down, both high school and recreational.

Once again, Levine was pressed to explain the data that has been used to determine their recommendation, and once again Levine had no answer. Even more, Levine continued to ignore the fact that thousands of events involving hundreds of thousand of student athletes have been occurring all summer long with very few, if any, covid interruptions. “School sports haven’t started, school is just starting this week, so I can’t use data from sports that haven’t officially started,” Levine said. “So we were using some data from other states. Children in other states are really no different than children here, so our recommendation was based upon on that.”

Levine continued “there is no sports-specific data but we have seen a rise in covid-19 infections among adolescents, she said.“We have seen a significant increase in the number of young people less than 19 that have covid-19 in Pennsylvania in almost all regions of Pennsylvania,” Levine said. “We have seen that. We’re not able to track it through our case investigations to a specific game or a specific practice, but we have seen an increase and we’re concerned about that.”
