Last night I made my first trip to Madison-Plains high school to watch the Golden Eagles (0-4) battle the Fairbanks Panthers (2-2). Both teams were hoping to end losing streaks. The Golden Eagles are coming off a 75-0 beating from Springfield Northeastern while the Panthers come in off a loss from Jamestown Greenview. I want to first say thanks to the men in the press box for the rosters and the nice little chat before the game and to also say the crowd was pretty large and at times very loud. The best part of this was even with the game getting out of hand the home side crowd for the most part stayed to the end.

Not even a minute into the game the Panthers would show what was coming when Nick Rhea lowered his shoulder like former Dallas Cowboys fullback Robert Newhouse putting a would-be tackler on the ground as he picked up 12-yards. At the 8:31 mark of the quarter, Noah Rhead used the work of his offensive line to go up the gut of the defense for an easy 45-yard touchdown run. Nate Russell hit the first of six point-after kicks to make this a 7-0 game.

Evan Coil, who had little to no time to make throws would find Hunter Mullins for a nice 20-yard gain with 4:55 left in the quarter. Coil won’t have the stats to go with how talented he really is because his offensive line has struggled all season long according to one of the fans I spoke to who has been to every game. Coil was back at it again seconds later when he again had time to scan the field to find the slippery Marcelius Winlock, who after making the catch did a nice Barry Sanders-like spin move to break a tackle and go 45-yards for the score making this a 7-6 game. At this point of the game, you could see that the skill players for the Golden Eagles had the talent to compete if and when the line gets things worked out this team could be a thorn in the sides of many of the teams they have remaining on the schedule.

Brogan Green would go right up the gut of the Golden Eagles defense for a 50-yard touchdown to make this a 14-6 game with 3:37 left in the quarter. The work of the offensive line of the Panthers was as good as the work of their defensive line. Those two units dominated this one making things miserable for the Golden Eagles. The Golden Eagles lines never stopped giving their all they were just out-talented. I think they will get better if for no other reason the pride factor of each of them has to kick in sooner or later. The last big play of the quarter came on a nice catch by Ben Stoughton. Stoughton is another Golden Eagle who is very good from his wideout slot.

Just seventeen seconds into the second quarter Coil was able to get a pass-off that was caught by Winlock for a gain of twenty. From there defense was the name of the game until the 51.9-second mark of the quarter when Brogan Green ended a long slow ten-play drive with a 24-yard touchdown to make this a 21-6 game. Jacob Slagle would recover a fumble for the home team right before the half came to a climax.

Coby Dellinger is one of many talented ball carriers for the Panthers would show some of that talent when he picked up 27-yards. The 4-play, 37-yard drive ended on a 1-yard touchdown run by Dellinger making this a 28-6 game. The Panthers were back on the prowl again with Nick Rhea picking up a total of 46-yards on three carries. On his fourth carry and the last one on the drive, he would go 6-yards to make this a 35-6 game with 3:21 left in the quarter. The last score of the game came when Ryker Green galloped 48-yards for a touchdown to make this a 42-6 game. The biggest play of the final frame that was played with the running clock came on a sack of Coil by Nick Newland.
