Montana 6-Man Spotlight: Hobson/Moore v. Great Falls Central Catholic (Photo Gallery)

Another weekend of small ball in Central Montana. Given the vast distances between towns, it’s not surprising how small and infrequent some football-playing schools can be from one another. Or, when more than one school has to come together to form a co-op team.

Hobson and Moore sit along Montana State Route 200, about 9 miles apart. A meager distance compared to some of the truly remote ‘neighboring towns’ you might find. Moore sits near the intersection with US191 in Fergus County, while Hobson sits in Judith Basin County just to the west. The two schools formerly had a third member of their co-op, Judith Gap, just south of Moore along US191, who now participate with Harlowton and Ryegate. When the three schools of Moore, Hobson, and Judith Gap formed their co-op, they played under the name Tri-Cities Titans. And, to this day, the football team can regularly be seen referred to as TCT or TCT Titans. However, as just the pair, they are regularly referred to by their two members, the Hobson/Moore Titans.

Home games are generally held at Brock French Memorial Field in Hobson. Sitting atop the hill overlooking the small town about a half mile south of Route 200. The field is named after Brock Kelly French, a 19-year-old alum of Hobson Public School who was enrolled, and playing for, Montana State University, who died in a car accident.

As with most six-man football fields, the length is 80 yards by 40 yards. With ten yard endzones. Four downs to go 15 yards. Other notable rules are that the Quarterback cannot run the with the ball. Which creates a common ‘double snap’ where the ball is snapped to an upback who then tosses it back to the quarterback. This giving the offense full ability to move the ball downfield. In addition to this rule, all players are receiver-eligible. While touchdowns and safeties are normal scoring plays, the PAT is reversed. A kick, being more difficult 4 on 6 blocking at the line is worth 2 points. While a pass or run is worth only 1 point. And, keeping with the difficulty theme, a field goal is worth 4 points. Though hardly attempted. In addition to scoring plays, the game is only 40 minutes long. With four ten-minute quarters.

Though Hobson and Moore are small towns in the Central Montana prairie, Great Falls Central Catholic hails from a much larger community. Great Falls, along the Missouri River, calls 60,000 among its inhabitants. The small private school plays six-man football as a single solitary team.

As for the game itself, Hobson/Moore jumped out to a comfortable, though low-scoring, lead and held on to win a low-scoring six-man affair, 38-12.
