Protime Predictions

| September 1, 2022

Protime is not really technologically savvy.  This past week when the powers to be at PFN called for a zoom meeting, Protime had no idea what they were talking about.  When Protime was a little Protimer, he played with model planes and hot wheels cars.  The noise they made was ‘zoom’, but he was pretty sure that wasn’t what a PFN zoom meeting was about.

Mrs. Protime lent Protime her ipad because she said she had zoomed into meetings before and you needed a computer.  Her ipad had a zoom app, Protime’s computer did not.  (Protime stays away from The Apps because they are some bad dudes.)  Mrs. P and Protime were under the impression they needed a zoom meeting ID and something called a passcode, but he kept getting texts on his phone from the PFN staff to click on a link.  When he clicked the link, his phone wanted to download an app.  Needless to say, Protime was a late zoomer to the meeting and he only got zoomed in because Protime Junior came to the rescue.

Last week Protime correctly predicted 20 of the 26 games for a .769 average.  This week he plans to do better, but it will be tough.  Every game save one will have teams playing with no losses.  And now for that prodigious prognosticator’s unparalleled prophesies.

Steel Valley @ Sto-Rox – This is each team’s first game and it’s huge.  The home team is ranked 3rd in the state by PFN, while Steel valley is honorable mention.  The Ironmen have a couple of big linemen back in the persons of Greg Smith (6’5” 315 lbs.) and Mike Crist (6’3” 285 lbs.)  Smith will be playing college ball at Miami of Ohio.  QB Cruce Brookins likes to run and had over 1,000 yards doing that last year.  Valley’s Angel Herrera is a very good middle linebacker and a difference maker.  Sto-Rox is led by returning QB Josh Jenkins and a trio of receivers, Zay Davis, Jaymont Green-Miller, and Dre Miller-Ross.  Jenkins threw for 1,471 yards and 21 TDs in 2021.  Those 3 receivers each had over 500 yards in receptions last season.  Defensively for the Vikings, Amare Harper is the guy to keep an eye on.  This game could go either way, the teams are not that varied in talent.  The crystal ball says the home team will win.  Sto-Rox 42 Steel Valley 40.

Allentown Central Catholic 1-0 @ Emmaus 1-0 – When it comes to EPC South games, there are no off weeks.  Protime thinks in recent years this is the toughest conference in PA.  Central Catholic had to come from behind to beat Liberty 34-28 last week.  They were led by Mr. Touchdown, Caiden Shaffer, who garnered 4 of them.  Nathan Schultz ran for 111 yards and the other score for the Vikings.  QB Matt Keyes threw for 120 yards to help the ACC cause.  The Hornets of Emmaus upended Freedom 19-13 last week.  Freedom was the preseason favorite to win the conference.  Tylik Jarvis rushed for 141 yards and QB Jake Fotta returned after sitting out a year with a torn ACL, throwing for 133 yards and a TD.  Last year’s QB, Josiah Williams, also had some snaps for the Hornets and scored the winning touchdown.  Allentown shutout Emmaus last year.  Protime thinks Emmaus wins it 28-24 this year.

State College 1-0 @ Downingtown East 1-0 – D’Antae Sheffey ran for 110 yards and scored 2 touchdowns in the Little Lions first game.  John Scott helped out by scoring 2 TDs also.  Bo Horvath is back for East and he rushed for 101 yards and a score against Pennridge.  Quarterback Jameson Jenkins had 127 yards passing.  Downingtown East won last year’s contest and Protime predicts they will do it again.  Cougars 24 Little Lions 17.

Cocalico 1-0 @ Solanco 1-0 – This should be a good one.  If you are near Quarryville maybe this is the game to see.  Protime hopes to see one of these teams in a few weeks.  The Eagles of Cocalico are flying high after defeating Warwick.  Their offense centers around the run.  Leading the way last week was Sam Steffey.  Mr. Steffey had 199 yards and scored a pair of TDs.  Aaryn Longenecker tallied 3 TDs on the ground.  On defense, Tyler Angstadt took down 10 opposing ball carriers.  The Golden Mules knocked off Lampeter-Strasburg in their first game.  RBs Cole Harris and Josiah Forren accounted for 148 yards rushing and 3 touchdowns combined.  Forren led the Mule ‘D’ with 16 tackles.  Protime consulted the crystal ball and has to go with Cocalico 35-28.

Crestwood 1-0 @ Dallas 1-0 – Crestwood beat Valley View last week which surprised many but not the Crestwood Comet faithful.  They were led by Noah Schultz who had 100 yards rushing and by Logan Rolles’ 2 touchdowns.  The Mountaineers downed Abington Heights last week.  Leading the ‘Eers were Parker Bolesta and his 251 yards rushing with 4 TDs.  QB Brady Zapoticky threw for 132 yards and a score.  Dallas won last year.  Protime says the home team will win by a score of 21-13.

Butler 1-0 @ Meadville 1-0 – Protime doesn’t remember ever previewing a Butler game before.  But in the 70s he saw them play when they were one of the best teams in the WPIAL.  He also remembers how good the band was.  The Golden Tornado will blow into Meadville fresh off a victory over Shaler led by Dashawn Cox and his 157 rushing yards.  Dashawn also scored a couple of TDs.  Butler’s quarterback, Max Schnur, passed for 202 yards and two touchdowns.  Schnur ran for another TD.  Cox caught 4 passes for 99 yards.  Meadville runs the wing-T and has a couple of movers and shakers to take it to another level.  Khalon Simmons ran for 203 yards and found the end zone 4 times last week.  Brady Walker ran for 135 markers and scored a TD.  The Bulldogs are tenacious on offense.  Butler’s defense will have to make some stops.  Butler won last year.  Protime flipped a coin.  Butler 21 Meadville 20.

Central Clarion 1-0 @ Port Allegany 1-0 – A big game in District 9 pits the CC Wildcats against the Gators of Port Allegany.  QB Jase Ferguson led CC’s attack last week by throwing 4 touchdown passes against Brookville.  He ended up with 316 yards passing.  Ashton Rex only caught 3 passes from Ferguson, but they covered 216 yards and two of them went for touchdowns.  RB Blaine Moses led Port’s offense last week by running for 132 yards and 3 TDs.  QB Drew Evens and Running Back/Receiver Noah Archer are two more weapons Central Clarion needs to be aware of.  Protime says Central Clarion 34 Port Allegany 26.

The Others:

DuBois 28 Brockway 20 – Protime picked this game to attend Friday night.  Should be a good battle between two teams only 11 miles apart.  Should also be the battle of quarterbacks as the Cam-Ron Hays runs the DuBois Beaver offense and Brayden Fox directs the Brockway Rover offense.  DuBois is the bigger school and probably a touchdown or so better.  But, Protime has been known to be wrong on occasion.

Exeter 41 Boyertown 28 – An unusual battle down east finds the Eagles winning out over the Bears.

Perkioman Valley 27 Downingtown West 24 – Protime is not sure about this game.  Should be a good one.  The coin flip goes to the Vikings to take the Whippets in another close contest that could go either way.

Central Valley 28 Avonworth 17 – The 3A defending state champs just keep winning.  Even now at 4A, the Warriors are going to be tough to beat.  Just ask the Antelopes.

Parkland 38 Nazareth 28 – Last year Parkland won a high-scoring affair.  This year the Trojans will win again, but those Blue Eagles of Nazareth are pesky for sure.

Central 28 Richland 26 – Protime went with the Rams last year and that didn’t go well.  This year he’s going with the Scarlet Dragons in a much closer game than in 2021.

Westinghouse 30 Steelton-Highspire 28 – Maybe a slight upset here or maybe not.  One of the top ten 2A teams, the Westinghouse Bulldogs, will take down the top 1A team, the Steel High Steamrollers, in a close one.

Central York 17 Cumberland Valley 14 – The Panthers won the battle last year and will eke out another win over the Eagles this year.

McKeesport 27 Penn-Trafford 23 – Both teams are good, but the Tigers are a bit better than the Warriors who are the 2021 defending 5A champs.

Hazleton 31 Wallenpaupack 20 – The Cougars pounce on the Buckhorns early and hold on for the victory.

Windber 35 Tussey Mountain 22 – Protime thinks coach Matt Grohal and his Windber Ramblers are going to surprise many people in 2022.  The Tussey Mountain Titans are victim #2 this year.

Troy 12 Montoursville 7 – Protime is going with the Troy Trojans only because they took out a good Bald Eagle team last week.  The Warriors are going to test them though in another game that will be decided on breaks and who can capitalize.

Aliquippa 40 Armstrong 30 – Can anyone stop the Quips, the defending 4A state champs?  The Riverhawks will give it their best shot, but it won’t be enough.

Northampton 44 Stroudsburg 35 – Protime loves Northampton’s nickname, the Koncrete Kids.  You’d think running into Northampton would be like running into a brick wall, but the Mounties will almost find a way to get by the Kids.

Juniata Valley 14 Curwensville 7 – The Hornets have trouble swarming and buzzing by the Golden Tide, but they do in the end.

Mount Carmel 21 Dunmore 14 – The Dunmore Bucks are chasing tornadoes this week, but the Red Tornado spin away from being the Bucks second victim.

Sharpsville 33 Titusville 14 – The Rockets of Titusville have a unique field, but the Blue Devils aren’t coming to Titusville to admire the field.  On a side note, John Heisman (the Heisman Trophy is named in his honor) attended Titusville High School, graduating in 1887.  He went on to coach football at various colleges including Georgia Tech.

Ben Franklin 18 Philadelphia Central 12 – The Electrons get fired up and dispose of the Lancers in a Philly Public League contest.
