EDITION – 4

Before diving into this week’s discussion, it would be wrong to not mention the well-publicized injuries that have occurred on the high school football field over the last 2 weeks. One of those injuries hit close to this writer.  It has proven to be a stark reminder that these are just kids attempting to play an incredibly violent game. Practice safe, play safe and be safe.  The Ransom Report is sending out best wishes to all injured players.  We are rooting for you, your teams, your family, and your friends.

Week 4 is upon us.  Get excited!

Two weeks ago, we looked at a couple of new rules for the 2023 season.  Last week we reviewed penalties that might be enforced with “half the distance” in mind.  This week we are going to combine these rules.

PLAY #1

It is 2nd and 14 from the Offense’s 6-yard line.   The quarterback drops back to pass, throws a completed pass to his wide receiver at the Offense’s 15-yard line who advances the ball to the Offense’s 25-yard line where he is tackled in bounds.  Prior to the pass, the offensive left tackle holds at the 3-yard line.

PLAY #2

It is 2nd and 14 from the Offense’s 6-yard line.   The quarterback drops back to pass, throws a completed pass to his wide receiver at the Offense’s 15-yard line who advances the ball to the Offense’s 25-yard line where he is tackled in bounds.  Prior to the pass, the offensive left tackle holds while in the end zone.

ANSWERS:

Play #1:  There is a foul for Offensive Holding.  The foul will obviously be accepted.  The next play will be from the Offense’s 3-yard line.  The foul is enforced from the previous spot.  It will be 2nd and 17.  Prior to this year, the foul would have been enforced from the spot of the foul.

Play #2:  There is a foul for Offensive Holding.  The foul will obviously be accepted.  The result of the play will be a safety.   A foul by the offense in their own end zone will still result in a safety.  This ruling is an exception to the new enforcement rules for this year.

NOTE:  Look for some bonus coverage early next week.  We will still release our normal “You Make the Call” coverage on Friday but earlier in the week we will take a closer look at the language officials use, before, during and after a game.
