Yesterday I made my first ever trip to Shawnee High School in Springfield, Ohio to watch the hometown Braves tangle with the Eagles from Eaton. The game would be played in front of a nice side crowd that at times was loud. The Braves were hoping to avoid an 0-2 start as they dropped a 31-7 decision against what should be a very good Valley View team, while the Eagles were hoping to improve to 2-0 as they started the 2022 season off by crushing Greenville, 44-13.

The Braves would go right to the air with RJ Griffin finding Brady Bumgardner for fifty-five years, then he found Ed Boehmer for the twenty-five-yard touchdown to make this a 6-0 game. With Mitchell Humpreys holding the ball, Matthew Holmes connected on the point after kick to make this a 7-0 game with 9:26 still left in the opening quarter.

With 8:38 remaining in the game, Bumgardner demonstrated his ability to play both offense and defense by intercepting a Brock Ebright pass. Ebright is a very good high school quarterback, but in this game he seldom had a chance to throw the ball because the defensive line of the Braves dominated the game, causing havoc in the Eagles’ backfield.

The Eagles’ defense would bend but not break on the ensuing drive as they got a stop on fourth and short at their own six-yard line when they stopped TJ Meeks with 6:20 showing on the clock. From there, the game would not have another score until Griffin took off on a forty-yard quarterback run to make this a 13-0 contest with 0:24 showing on the clock.

Ebright would find Dillon Jerdon for sixteen yards for the last big play of the quarter. If not for a nice tackle from Max Guyer, the play would have gone for a larger gain.

The drive would end at the 10:03 mark of the second quarter when Trint Cordle picked off an Ebight pass and took it back close to ninety yards for another Braves touchdown to make this a 20-0 game with the point after kick being good. At this point in the game, one had to start wondering about a running clock game because the home team had dominated every phase of the game.

Eaton would get a twenty-six-yard completion from Ebight to Dylan Matlock with a little more than 8:00 left in the half. Then it was a thirty-two-yard completion to Leslie Abner at the 7:02 mark of the first quarter. After Ebright was sacked by Thomas Morgan, the Eagles offense would find the endzone on an Ebight to Leslie Orr from ten yards out, making this a 20-6 game.

The Braves would recover the second-half kickoff when Devon Rader pounced on the ball after it had hit an Eaton player. The rest of the quarter sort of flew by, with both teams taking turns stopping the other. Then, with 1:23 left on the clock PLAYER OF THE GAME ON PAFOOTBALLNEWS RJ Griffin juked a defenseman, then scampered into the endzone for a 25-yard touchdown. Humphreys easily made the point after kick to give us a 27-6 game. The quarter came to a close with Meeks sacking Ebright.

The final frame would see the Braves score on a Griffin to Calden Craig pass to give the home team the 34-6 lead. The Braves defense got another good play with this one being made by Boston Scanlon, who stopped Cordis Berard for a two-yard loss. With 6;05 left in this one-sided affair Ebight would find Ian Ruebush for the games final touchdown giving us our final score of 34-12. The Eagles defense would get the last big play in this one when Zion Crowe recorded a sack.
