IUP seems to be in the playoffs every year and make a long run every couple of years. There season which was on life support basically came to an end today when they fell to California on Homecoming 30-20. The first quarter seemed to last forever with both teams getting four possessions. Big plays and short times of possession were the norm. When the dust cleared it was 13-13 at the end of one quarter. The second quarter saw barely over 100 yards of total offense between both teams. The only score occurred when the Vulcans blocked an Aiden Spitler punt and ran it in for the go ahead touchdown. They would never trail again. Hawks starting quarterback Karst Hunter was injuried midway through the quarter. IUP played their two backups the rest of the way including Nico Marchitelli who I had the privilege to watch a few times in Saltsburg for Kiski Prep. The Hawks would turn the ball over three times in the second half and managed just over 200 yards for the entire game. They would score a late touchdown to make it look closer than it really was. The Vulcans had the ball 15 more minutes, had almost twice as many years and were plus two in the turnover battle. The Hawks special teams play which was a sore spot in their opener against Ashland reared its ugly head with a blocked punt that was returned for a TD and a missed PAT. IUP still has five games left in the regular season to get things straighten out, but there will be no playoffs this year.
