Last night I made my first trip to West high school in West Portsmouth to catch the home team West Senators battle the KIPP Jaguars a team I was seeing for the first time. After watching the two teams go through their warmups I walked up to the pressbox to get the rosters for both teams, while talking to a few guys I asked them how they felt about this one and then I said according to Drew Pasteur’s prediction page this is a thirty point game I added I can’t see it being that close.

Just ten seconds into the game West had a 7-0 lead thanks to an 80-yard touchdown pass from Mitchell Irwin to a wide-opened Jeffery Bishop followed by the first of six point-after kicks off of the foot of Carson Malnar. On the play, the West front line gave their quarterback as close as perfect protection as they could allowing the pass to float in the receiver’s hand, who had gotten himself opened by ten yards.

Twenty-eight seconds later a muffed exchange on a handoff by KIPP Mason Parker would pounce on the ball for West the ensuing drive would not result in any points due to a fumble by Alex Blevens after he had made a nice catch. Making the recovery for the Jags was Kameron Childs. Timir Wynn would be stopped short of the chains when Ryan Sissel got to him for a loss of four yards and forced a punt.

Sissel, one of the better backs I have got to see this season would dash 32-yards for the West touchdown on a run where it appeared the Jags defense wanted no part in tackling him making this a 14-0 game, with 7:15 still left in the opening quarter. On the ensuing kickoff, the Jags return team hesitated in fielding the short kick allowing Mason Parker enough time to race downfield and dive on the ball. The short 33-yard drive ended with another Sissel touchdown run, this one from a yard out making this a 21-0 game at the 5:40 mark.

Kipp would pick off an Irwin pass with 9:50 left in the half with Anthony Page doing the honors. Antiono Campbell would throw a nice block on the ensuing drive to allow Wynn to pick up 9-yards. Wynn is a dangerous runner especially when he gets some help from his blockers. The West defense would close the drive a short time later without any more damage being done.

Irwin would use the big block from Wyatt Weghorst to throw a 60-yard touchdown pass to Cole Tipton, the best two-way player I have watched all season making this a 28-0 game, with 3:20 left in the half. The West defense would make short work of the Kipp offense with Parker getting an easy pick on the pass thrown from Wynn. Sissel would give his team a 35-0 lead on his 21-yard touchdown run after he took a hard hit and kept his balance to find paydirt, with 1:02 left on the clock.

Kipp ended the half with back-to-back 18-yard runs by Campbell and Wynn. I.M.O.KIPP has some dangerous athletics, especially on offense but the game plan was unimaginative making it easy for the West defense to read and stop without much thinking. They have a big offensive line that looked built to run any kind of power running formation you could draw up but were seldom put in that situation causing them to have a long hard night.

The second half flew by with the running clock not allowing much time for either team to do much. For Kipp in the third quarter, they would get another 18-yard run from Wynn. Sissel ran 37 yards and looked to have another touchdown but he coughed up the ball where Wynn recovered it in the endzone. Sissel would atone for his rare mistake with a 44-yard touchdown run to put West up 42-0 at the 8:28 mark of the final frame. The West defense would get another pick this one with 4:43 this one by Solomon Norman. The final score of the night came on a Wynn 56-yard pass to a wide-opened Drelya Manley followed by a two-point conversion run from Kameron Childs to give us the 42-8 final.
