North East (5-3, 4-1 in Region 3) defeated Fairview (4-4, 3-2 in Region 3) in a rare Saturday day game, 31-0, at Ted Miller Stadium in North East as they look to continue to put pressure on Corry (who has clinched at least a share of the Region title) as District 10 playoffs drawing ever nearer.

After a dull 0-0 1st quarter and the score still staying like that with under 2 minutes to go in the 2nd quarter, North East senior DB Jayden Wittman intercepted a Cullen O’Connor pass and returned it 25 yards untouched for the first score of the game with 1:47 before halftime.

North East’s other touchdowns were scored by QB Bryson Galloway on a 1 yard quarterback sneak, a 25 yard pass from Galloway to senior WR Dillon Rogers, a 17 yard running score on a pitch by senior RB Ethen Ringer (all in the 3rd quarter) and senior K Josh Banaag converted a 30-yard FG with just under 9 minutes remaining in the 4th quarter to round out the Grape Pickers’ scoring.

North East will travel to Wattsburg next week to take on the Seneca Bobcats, knowing that a win over Seneca and a Corry loss to Girard would mean they share the Region 3 title with Corry, while Fairview will make the short trek west to Albion to take on West County opponent Northwestern.

The Grape Pickers are hoping to build on last year’s success after they upset Grove City out of the Southern Region in District 10 in the quarterfinals in a 35-7 win, their first playoff win since 2009. Traditionally, Erie County teams struggle in the playoffs against teams from Mercer County, but North East stifled the Eagles and beat them twice last season.

A shortage in referee crews in recent seasons in District 10 has seen a rise of Thursday & Saturday games for teams across Northwest PA, and in an odd statistical quirk, this is the 3rd time in the last 4 seasons that Fairview and North East have played each other on a Saturday, all of which had big playoff implications.

In 2023, Fairview defeated North East 28-14 to hand the Grape Pickers their first Region loss of the season in the 2nd to last game of the season, and in 2024 the Tigers won 24-7 to claim a share of the Region title. With this win, North East continues to strengthen their playoff resume for the District 10 committee.
