Northampton Escapes with a 28-24 win over Delaware Valley in Home Opener

In a tight contest between the 1-0 Konkrete Kids and an 0-1 Warriors team desperate for a win, it was the K-Kids that would deliver the knockout blow after their junior DB Colby Brearman intercepted Warriors QB Lucas Petersheim with just over a minute to go. Delaware Valley would race out to a quick 14-0 lead, but Northampton through 3 TDs from junior sensation RB Chase Kessler and a long rushing TD from QB Zion McKinney, would fight back and show the resilience of a now 2-0 team with contender aspirations.

Northampton would win the toss and defer to the 2nd half. Delaware Valley would take the ball from their own 45 to start the game and would strike quickly, as Lucas Petersheim would fire a 25 yard TD to WR Jacob Wolak to give the Warriors a 7-0 lead at the 9:08 mark of the 1st quarter.

 

 

Northampton’s next possession started at their own 26 and was a heavy Chase Kessler drive, as he finished it off with a 7 yard TD run to bring the Konkrete Kids deficit to 14-7 with 10:24 left in the 2nd.

After a 3 and out from the Warriors, the K-Kids took advantage on their next possession starting from their 49, as Chase Kessler’s name was called throughout another drive and ended it with a 3 yard TD run, his 2nd of the night.

On their next possession, the Warriors would also do a run heavy drive with their star RB, Devin Estevez, as they would start from their own 49, but the drive stalled at the 5 and forced a short FG attempt from Matthew Marrotta, which was good and gave Delaware Valley a 17-14 lead with 53.6 seconds left in the half.

 

At Halftime the score still stood at 17-14 Delaware Valley. However, Northampton would start the 2nd half with the ball at their own 10, and once again, Chase Kessler would be the engine leading the offense downfield and capping the drive off with a 1 yard TD run, his 3rd of the night with 4:24 left in the 3rd.

 

While Northampton took their first lead of the night, it would be short lived, as Kessler’s counterpart, Devin Estevez continued to come alive as well. After the Warriors started the drive at their own 20, a run heavy drive would set up a 5 yard TD pass from Petersheim to Nick Vilord. Delaware Valley went back in front 24-21 with 9:36 left in the game.

 

After both teams endured 3 and outs, it would be the K-Kids with the ball looking for an answer to the Warriors TD. The answer came in the form of a 65 yard TD run by QB Zion McKinney, who in 1 play from their 35 yard line would have Northampton in the end zone and back in front 28-24 with 5:40 left in the game.

Trailing by 4 and needing a TD for the lead, Delaware Valley started the ensuing possession at their own 26. The Warriors threatened with a few first downs and got all the way their own 49 before a 4th and 10 desperation heave was intercepted by Northampton’s Colby Brearman, with 1:16 left in the game and returned it to the Northampton 39 which ended the game with a few kneel downs.

 

Northampton improved to 2-0 with the win and will travel to take on Whitehall in the Cement Bowl next Friday at 7. Delaware Valley fell to 0-2 and will play their home opener against East Stroudsburg South next Friday at 7.
