Crusaders score first eight possessions as quarterback Tommy Murphy ties school records for touchdown passes in a game Saturday afternoon

PEN ARGYL- Junior quarterback Tommy Murphy tied his former teammate Matt Bodnar’s school record for touchdown passes in a game with seven. Bodnar set the record in 2024 against Garden Spot in the season opener. Murphy threw for 405 yards Saturday afternoon while completing 20 of 25 passes as the Crusaders kept tier record unblemished with a convincing 55-7 win over the Green Knights at Alumni Stadium affectionately known as the Stadium “Up on the hill” for the steep inclined path that leads to the field in Pen Argyl.

The only rushing touchdown the Crusaders came on their first score of the game as Aaron Gordon ashed in from nine yards out to make it 7-0 on a nine play 65 yard drive with 9:41 left in the first quarter Clemente Cintron added the extra-point to get the scoring barrage started.

Murphy would then take over, at one point in the game he would throw for six touchdowns in twelve pass attempts. After a apparent pick six by Drew Boyd was called back on a penalty. The Murphy to Boyd connection hooked up for their first of three scores on the afternoon on a 30 yard touchdown pass for a 14-0 lead.

Following a Pen Argyl punt, again it was Murphy to Boyd this time from 11 yards out making a the score 20-0 as Cintron missed the point-after with 36 seconds left to play in the first quarter.

The Green Knights were forced to punt again on their next drive which led to Murphy finding Jonathan Striba for a 14 yard touchdown making it 27-0 with 9:50 left in the second quarter.

Pen Argyl then did get something going the next time they got the ball picking a couple of first downs but two incomplete passes and a sack ended that drive with zero points.

From there it only took five plays and 50 yards for next Notre Dame score as Striba too a pass from Murphy for a five yard score to make it 34-0 with 4:09 left in the half.

On the ensuing kickoff Chris Crespo returned the ball 84 yards to the Notre Dame six, however the next play James Accatino was reaching for the goal line had the ball come loose and went out of bounds in the end zone for a touchback giving the ball back to the Crusaders.

It took just one play as Murphy connected with C.J. Diaz a long the home sidelines for an 80 yard score with still 3:32 left before halftime making the score 41-0.

Following another Pen Argyl punt, Murphy found Boyd wide open in the back of the end zone, Boyd made a sensational falling down backwards catch making in a 48-0 score with 1:17 on the clock.

“I was very pleased with teams effort today, playing on a Saturday is a challenge for us. I’ve used examples from the past when we struggled up here, because we weren’t ready to play. I am proud of how the team responded today.” Head coach Phil Stambaugh stated after the game.

Murphy would tie the record just a few plays into the third quarter when Cintron was on the end of a 29 yard pass to make it 55-0 with 7:06 left in the quarter.

Pen Argyl avoided being shutout as Accatino scored from 10 yards out late in the fourth quarter.

Next week Notre Dame-Green Pond (4-0) finally get to return to their home stadium on campus, after a two year absence due to renovations being made to facility on a Thursady night as the host Catasauqua (1-3). The Roughriders dropped a 24-13 decision to Palmerton this past Friday night. Pen Argyl (1-3) will host unbeaten Palmerton (4-0) Saturday afternoon.
