Both the Belle Vernon Leopards and the Waynesburg Central Raiders came into this game with a 7-1 record. The two offenses went back and forth until the Leopards pulled too far ahead for Waynesburg. Ultimately, Belle Vernon took a 55-39 win over Waynesburg.
Waynesburg Central won the coin toss and elected to receive the kickoff. The Raiders drove down the field and finished with thirty-two yard field goal to go up by seven. This was the last time the Raiders ever had the lead as Belle Vernon immediately answered with a touchdown. This is where Chace Petrosky began his impressive game. This touchdown, from fourteen yards out, was his first of five touchdowns. The Raiders were unable to generate any points on their next drive and Belle Vernon started on the second Petrosky scoring drive. His second touchdown came from thirty-one yards out and gave the Leopards an eleven point lead. A few plays later, the first quarter clock came to a close.
After switching field sides, Waynesburg scored their first touchdown. These points were generated by wide receiver Jack Riccuiti and quaterback Teagen Crouse on a forty-eight yard touchdown. The Raiders were unable to keep the Leopards out of the endzone once again though, and Quarterback Jace Gedekoh punched it in for a seven yard touchdown. Once more, Waynesburg Central answered with a Riccuiti and Crouse touchdown, this time from thirty-three yards out. The offensive outburst continued for Belle Vernon though, as Godekoh found Luca Ghilani from fifty-four yards out. With just over two minutes left in the half, the Leopards had a 28-17 lead. Both the Raiders and Belle Vernon had short unsuccessful drives and the half ended.
Belle Vernon received the second half kickoff, and punted after a three and out. The explosion of running then began, and it started with a Ky-Mani Sumpter seventy-seven yard touchdown. Less than thirty seconds later, Petrosky took off for a seventy-one yarder of his own. That was his third touchdown of the night. The Raiders weren’t ready to be done yet though, and Crouse broke free for a sixty-four yard score. Down by four, the Waynesburg defense forced a punt, but the recovery was muffed and the Leopards recovered. Belle Vernon never looked back and Petrosky scored once again. The twenty-seven yard score gave Belle Vernon an eleven point lead. One play by Waynesburg took it to the fourth quarter. A minute into the quarter, the Raiders punted and Petrosky scored on the next play. His fifth and final score came from sixty-five yards out and gave Belle Vernon an eighteen point lead. Forced to attempt an unlikely fourth down, Waynesburg’s next drive ended due to a turnover on downs. For the last time, the Leopards put a touchdown on the board. Gedekoh scored another rushing touchdown and because of a missed extra point, the lead was twenty four. Waynesburg’s dying effort was good enough to put one last touchdown on the board. The Riccuiti and Crouse connection did it for the Raiders, but the eight points the possession gave were not enough. A failed onside kick, and one last drive from Belle Vernon ended the game.
Belle Vernon (8-1) will travel to Elizabeth Forward next Friday, and Waynesburg Central (7-2) goes to Valley.
