Old Dominion traveled down to Conway, SC and picked up a 21-8 victory over conference opponent Coastal Carolina. Led by a 42 yard scoop and score from Old Dominion’s Mario Thompson to put the Monarchs up 14-3 in the second quarter. They would add on one more touchdown later in the half but that proved to be just insurance at the end.
The first four drives of the game, two from either side, resulted in four punts and 18 total yards of offense. Old Dominion would finally break free and get on the board after a two yard scamper from Pennsylvania’s own, ODU QB Quinn Henicle (Downington, PA), capped off a 50 yard drive for the Monarchs. The ensuing drive for Coastal Carolina, ODU LB Mario Thompson would recover a strip sack and take it 42 yards for a scoop and score to put the Monarchs up 14-0.
Coastal Carolina tacked on a field goal early in the second quarter before fumbling on their own 6 yard line, setting up the final TD of the day. ODU QB Jaxon Potter found WR Leon Haughton JR in the back of the endzone, sending the Monarchs up 21-3 with a whole half of football to play. Coastal Carolina would hit a field goal as time expired in the half. Aside from a fourth quarter safety from CCU, the scoring would stop there and Old Dominion’s defense would shape the rest of the game. Old Dominion would force four interceptions in the second half to seal the game for the Monarchs. Ja’Mez Drummer, Zion Frink, Brandon Crutchfield, and Taveres Murray Jr all came down with interceptions for the Monarchs.
Old Dominon improves to 3-7(2-5 Sun Belt) and will have a bye week before facing UCONN on the road Nov. 21. The loss drops Coastal Carolina to 3-6(2-3 Sun Belt) and they will remain home to face Arkansas State on Nov. 14.
