Pennridge Outlasts Central Bucks West In Thrilling Fashion

The sheer number of highlight reel plays in this ballgame is not how you’d typically think of a low scoring defensive slugfest. This game, though, matched and exceeded drama you’d typically see in a 42-35 type of battle. And at the end of it all, it was Sean Leuthe racing to the end zone with nothing but green in front of him with 28 seconds left on the clock, lifting Pennridge to a 14-7 victory over Central Bucks West Friday night. The Rams defense also had one final statement to make, as well.

In the much anticipated battle of state ranked Suburban One powers, things got chippy at times, sloppy at times, but most notably, both teams left it all out on the field and battled to the echo of the whistle on each snap.

Central Bucks West got the ball first and drove into Pennridge territory. After a Braylen Cape 14-yard pickup, the promising drive was cut short on a fumble. On a ball that was never snapped back to Josh George, the Pennridge defense swooped in and recovered the football while the Bucks offense, in large part, believed that the play never actually began and that whistles were blown to stop play. After the officials huddled to discuss, it was ruled Pennridge ball at its own 19.

The Rams also moved the ball rather well at first. Bradley Dornon caught a 27-yard throw from Aiden Tetkowski, putting the Rams on the Bucks 33. On the next play, however, with Liam Laphen closing in, Tetkowski fired near the end zone and into the diving arms of Mason Darrows.

Pennridge got the ball back with :44 left in a scoreless first quarter. After driving from their own 46 to the Bucks 31, the Rams faced a 4th & 1 call. Ronin Loch took the snap and pushed ahead, but was stuffed by the Bucks defense for the turnover on downs. With 9:17 to go in the first half, we remained scoreless.

Pennridge returned the favor on CB West’s ensuing drive, as Marquan Walker stuffed Louie Cipollo on 3rd & 3, forcing a punt. Neither team managed a first down again until Pennridge’s final drive of the half that came with 4:15 to go in still a scoreless contest.

Pennridge took over pinned back at its own 10. Ryan Zadroga caught his man in the backfield on the second play, putting the Rams in a 3rd & 11 situation. But Trevor Picciotti was up to the task, bouncing out to the right side and accelerating over midfield for the big pickup to flip field position. A pair of connections from Tetkowski to Dornon moved Pennridge into the red zone, the first time either side had been so close to scoring. From ten yards out, Tetkowski dropped back and was under pressure. He fired across his body into the back left corner of the end zone where Blake Landherr brought it in for the score. Pennridge had finally struck first and carried the 7-0 lead to halftime.

At the half, Pennridge had held the Bucks to 84 total yards and only one first down since CBW’s opening drive.

Coming out of the locker room for the third quarter, the Rams had big goals of controlling the tempo and keeping CB West’s offense off the field. So much so, that on 4th & 2 from their own 28, head coach Kyle Beller rolled the dice and kept his offense on the field. Picciotti picked up four hard-earned yards to keep the drive alive. However, a crucial holding call backed the offense up and forced a punt.

Central Bucks West ended up facing a 4th & 8 call on the Rams 38. As Josh George dropped back and rolled out to his left, Blake Landherr came from his linebacker position and met the quarterback, dropping him for the turnover on downs. With three quarters in the books, Pennridge held on to the 7-0 lead.

The Bucks forced a quick three and out and took over at their own 20 with 11:50 to go in regulation. In search of a big play, CB West called upon Nick Miletto. Miletto busted through the middle for 26 yards, pushing his team near midfield. A pass over the right side to Miletto picked up 21 more and a personal foul eventually moved the ball to the Rams 10. With 9:27 to go in the game. Louie Cipollo took the handoff and cruised through the line and into the end zone. The extra point tied the game at 7-7.

The Bucks painted themselves into a corner later in the fourth. After Davis Parisi nearly hadh himself a pick-six, CB West forced Pennridge to punt. However, Miletto coughed up the football at his own 30 and Pennroidge took over.

Fortunately for the Bucks and their fans, the ensuing Pennridge drive netted -3 yards and Austin Keller’s 50-yard field goal try was no good. Pennridge nearly got the ball back again on a catch and fumble by Liam Laphen. The Rams were initially awarded the ball, but after another intense discussion amongst the officials, an inadvertent whistle was ruled, and the down did not count. Reviewing video, the call was correct, as the whistle blew before the fumble recovery was made.

CB West punted on their next possession and with 1:15 to play in a 7-7 ballgame, Pennridge took over on its own 15. Picciotti collected a catch over the right side and took it into Bucks territory for a 30-yard gain. Two plays later, Sean Leuthe, had remained quiet for much of the night on offense, got free over the middle and hauled in a ball at the 20. With nothing but green in front of him, he raced the last 20 yards to the house to put Pennridge ahead 14-7 with :28 left in the fourth.

 

Devin Kelly put the finishing touches on this one, making a leaping interception on Josh George on the ensuing play. Pennridge kneeled it out and improved to 4-0 on the season.

Things get no easier for the Rams, as they now travel to Central Bucks East. West will host North Penn.
