Pennridge Stifles Souderton

The Pennridge Rams scored three second half touchdowns to put separation between themselves and the Souderton Indians on their way to a 28-11 home victory Thursday night at Helman Field in Perkasie. Moments after Souderton had climbed back into the game with their first touchdown of the night, the Rams quickly countered in the form of a deep ball to Nate Derstine to sieze momentum once and for all.

But this one could have gone very differently early on. After Souderton punted on their opening possession, the Rams faced 4th & 1 on their own 23. Head coach Kyle Beller rolled the dice early, opting to go for it with the QB sneak. The Souderton line got low and stuffed the try, giving them a golden opportunity near the red zone. A false start set the Indians back five yards and a 4th & 10 pass from Brett Pollock fell incomplete over the middle.

The Rams then embared on a 12 play drive, aided by a Sean Leuthe 19-yard run over left tackle. Two plays into the second quarter, Aiden Tetkowski rolled out to his right and hit Ryan Flood behind the secondary. But the score was called back on an illegal formation. A Steady dose of Trevor Picciotti, though, moved the ball closer and five plays later, Tetkowski and Flood hooked up on a nearly identical route for the first score of the game and a 7-0 lead with 9:43 to go in the half.

The Indians crossed midfield on their ensuing possession, but only managed a yard in their final set of downs. After punting it away, Pennridge had another big chance.

This time, Tetkowski was looking for Nate Derstine down the far side. Derstine was behind his defender by a step but caught the ball going out of bounds in the end zone. A rare Rams miscue saw them cough the ball up on the next play, giving Souderton a reprieve.

Late in the half, a Tetkowski pass over the middle appeared to go through the hands of his intended target and into the waiting arms of Sam Arthur, setting up Souderton at the Rams 22 with :44 to go before the break. Pollock, somehow escaping a sack, shoveled one off to  Chris Ormeno for his first completion of the night and Ormeno got down to the 10. Mike Ferguson made a touchdown saving hit on Ormeno, separating him from the football at the 3. With time running out, Souderton settled for the short field goal and Pennridge led 7-3 at the half.

The Rams defense came out strong in the second half, not allowing a Souderton first down until beyond the midpoint of the third and only three first downs in the entire second half. After the Rams successfully defended a fake punt pass try by Pollock, Sean Leuthe extended his team’s lead. On 1st & 10 from the Indians’ 23, Leuthe cut to the outside and down the sideline to make it 14-3 with 7:00 in the third quarter.

Souderton responded, finally getting the big play they needed. Levi Lopez, after appearing to be tackled for a short gainer, somehow broke free after being pushed back and turned it up for a  32-yard gainer. A personal foul made it half the distance down to the 7. Lopez’s nine yard gainer setup Pollock for the 1-yard touchdown plunge. Lopez went up the gut for two points. Suddenly, Souderton was within 14-11 with 1:10 to go in the third.

But the momentum shift was short-lived. A personal foul by Souderton on the ensuing kickoff marched Pennridge to the Indians 46. Three plays later, Tetkowski fired one deep over the middle to Derstine for a 40-yard touchdown, pushing the lead right back to 21-11 with 11:53 to play in the ballgame.

Souderton ran only six plays in the fourth quarter, being completely shutdown. Devin Kelly came up with a huge tackle for loss, corralling Stone McKenna in the backfield for a loss of five.

Pennridge, in their final real drive of the night, chewed up nearly seven minutes of the fourth quarter clock and capped it with a Trevor Picciotti 3-yard touchdown carry to make the final score 28-11.

Pennridge improved to 2-0 on the young season and faces its first road test next week at Council Rock South. Souderton fell to 0-2 and looks to bounce back at home against Central Bucks West.
