2014 Short Picks – Week 6

Tagged under: pfn

| October 2, 2014

Last week’s picks produced a not so great 22 correct and 13 incorrect. We had a number of games decided by three points or less. So this week I need to get the loss column down to a respectable number. Lots of competitive games in each district dot the schedule for all the fans around the state.

Let’s start with District 12 where the West Catholic Burrs with a 2-3 record visit the Saints of Neuman Goretti. The Saints sport a 3-2 record. The Burrs are much better than the 2-3 record…West Catholic.

A great match up finds LaSalle visiting the Archbishop Wood Vikings. Both the Explorers and the Vikings will be playing late into November in their respective classifications. In a very close call I like the Vikings…Archbishop Wood.

In what should be a pretty good duel between two quarterbacks in District 2, Dallas’ Mountaineers host the Wyoming Valley West Spartans. The Mountaineers have Matt Harrison at the controls while the Spartans rely on the arm of Brady Davison. I give a slight edge to…Wyoming Valley West.

Turning to District 4, we find the Hughesville Spartans (4-1) at the South Williamsport Mountaineers also with a 4-1 record. The Mountaineers are rolling after the opening day 2 point loss to Montoursville…South Williamsport.

The Red Tornado of Mt. Carmel and the Tigers of Southern Columbia always brings out a big crowd. I just don’t think the home fans at Mt. Carmel will be as happy as the visitors…So. Columbia.

Two undefeated teams in District 4 meet in Wellsboro home of the Hornets. The Hornets welcome the Troy Trojans. In this one, the home town fans will be happy…Wellsboro.

Two inter-district games are on tap for District 5 and District 6 fans. Everett’s Warriors (4-1) visit the Bellwood Antis Blue Devils who lost for the second time last week. The Blue Devils bounce back in a big way…Bellwood-Antis.

District 5’s Chestnut Ridge welcome District 6 representative the Scarlet Dragons of Central. Both squads sport a 4-1 record. The Dragons defense will be the difference…Central.

The big game in District 6 features the undefeated Blairsville Bobcats and the 5-0 Homer Center Wildcats. The Wildcat’s came away with a big win last week as they scored a 43-40 victory over Purchase Line. Blairsville’s defense will not be quite so generous this week…Blairsville.

Moniteau’s Warriors face another top team in District 9 in the Clarion Bobcats. The Warriors are coming off a loss to Karns City last week. Maybe the schedule gets a little easier for the Warriors after this week…Clarion.

Kane’s Wolves are 4-1 as they host the Brockway Rover Dogs who are also 4-1. The Rover Dogs are just a bit better 4-1 team than the Wolves…Brockway.

In another great quarterback match up, Gabe French and his Beavers of Dubois welcome the Oil City Oilers led by QB Jackson McFall. I expect a high scoring affair with the Oilers coming out on top…Oil City.

In District 10, the Girard Yellow Jackets take a 5-0 record into the Fairview Tigers crib. The Yellow Jackets are off to one of the best starts in years and the winning should continue…Girard.

The Sharpsville Blue Devils have pretty much dominated the District 10 single A class for years. The Blue Devils host the Lakeville Sailors who are 4-1. This game will be much closer than most expect and I would not be surprised if the Sailors pull off an upset, but I am just not bold enough to call it…Sharpsville.

In District 3, the Conrad Weiser Scouts visit the Eagles of Exeter Twp. The Scouts lost by one point to the Eagles last year. Similar score this year with the Eagles in the winner’s circle again…Exeter Twp.

Eastern York’s Golden Knights will attempt to end the winning streak of the Gettysburg Warriors. The Warriors improve upon their 4-1 record…Gettysburg.

In the WPIAL, Bishop Canevin’s Bulldogs with a 4-1 record visit the undefeated Antelopes of Avonworth. The Antelopes are now playing for a top seed in the playoffs…Avonworth.

The 4-1 Beaver Falls Bobcats face a formidable foe on the road as they visit the Quips of Aliquippa. The Quips are looking for the number 1 seed in the WPIAL AA…Aliquippa.

The Bulldogs of Bethlehem Center and the Commodores of Frazier are undefeated. Both teams are pretty evenly matched so normally I would go with the home team, but this time I’m picking the visiting Bulldogs…Beth Center.

The Franklin Regional Panthers have won four straight after the opening season loss. The Panthers visit undefeated Hampton this week with hopes of improving their ranking in the AAA class of the WPIAL. The win here will go to the last team with the ball…Hampton.

Can the undefeated Jayhawks of Jeanette travel to Clairton and knock off PFN’s # 1 ranked Bears? This will be the first test for the Bears this year as they have averaged 70 points per game and the defense has given up just 13 points to date. Clairton is still number one in my book until someone proves otherwise…‘Da Bears.

Quakertown made a believer out of me last week as the Panthers improved to 5-0. The Panthers visit Harry S. Truman this week. Harry said, “The buck stops here.” But the winning streak doesn’t…Quakertown.

Great Valley’s Patriots are 4-1. The Patriots host the Whippets of Downingtown West. I like the Whippets in a close one…Downingtown West.

Coatesville’s Red Raiders are sailing along almost uncontested in racking up a 5-0 record. The Red Raiders go on the road to Downingtown East where I suspect the Red Raiders might be due for a bit of a letdown. My upset special for the week…Downingtown East.

Neshaminy’s Redskins are in the rebuilding mode for this season. The Redskins will have a tough go this week when they host the Central Bucks South Titans. The Titans are a legitimate contender…Central Bucks South.

In a class single A game, the Jenkinstown Drakes host the undefeated Bristol Warriors. The Warriors are gunning for an undefeated season…Bristol.
