It’s that time of the year sports fans. Teams from all over the state have played out their regular season in hopes of getting to the next step, the playoffs. In District 9 it’s no different. It’s time for the players to ignore those bumps and bruises and take their game to the next level. It’s time for coaches to re-evaluate some things, ride the strengths of the team, and throw in a few new wrinkles. And in other words, it’s time for the rubber to meet the road. It’s playoff time!!!
CLASS 1A: (8 teams qualify)
Eight teams qualify, but only 7 entered post season play. Port Allegany is the top seed, and therefore received a bye. Redbank Valley is the #2 seed and they will host Cameron County, the #7 seed. These two teams did not play each other during the regular season. Redbank Valley is the defending D-9 Class A champ.
The next first round game pits #3 seeded Union/AC Valley against the #6 seed, Otto-Eldred. These squads did not meet during the season either.
The other first round matchup will Keystone, the #4 seed hosting Ridgway, the #5 seed. In a really good game played just three weeks ago, Keystone stopped Ridgway by a score of 22-20.
The following week, Port Allegany will take on the Ridgway-Keystone winner, and the Redbank-Cameron County victor will tangle with the Union/AC Valley-Otto-Eldred vanquisher.
CLASS 2A: (4 teams qualify)
Four teams qualify in Class 2A, but only 2 had winning records and entered the playoff picture. Central Clarion is the #1 seed and Karns City is #2. They will hookup in Brookville with Central Clarion obviously being the home team. Central Clarion soundly defeated the Karns City 65-0 at the end of September, but the KC Gremlins are looking forward to this opportunity. They are a better team at this point than they were. Sometimes losses are a good thing in the long haul of things. We will see. Central Clarion’s Wildcats are the defending D-9 champs in Class 2A and they are the #2 ranked team in Pennsylvania according to most polls.
CLASS 3A: (2 teams qualify)
This year there are only two 3A teams in District IX. They are Brockway and St. Marys. Clearfield has won the D-9 AAA crown the past 4 years, but are now competing in the 4A classification. Brockway is the #1 seed and will be the home team. However, the game will be played on a neutral which will be Clearfield. These two teams did not meet in the regular season.
DISTRICT 8-9 SUBREGIONAL – CLASS 4A: (4 teams qualify)
Only 3 teams entered the postseason tournament. They are the Clearfield Bison, who are the #1 seed, the #2 seeded Punxsutawney Chucks, and the # 3 seeded USO team from the Pittsburgh City League. USO will travel to Brookville Saturday afternoon to play Punxsy, who will be the home team. The winner will get Clearfield at another neutral site next week.
DISTRICT 6-8-9-10 SUBREGIONAL – CLASS 5A (4 teams qualify)
The four teams here are selected based on points earned not their records. Hollidaysburg out of D6 is the top seed. Cathedral Prep is the second seed. DuBois received the third seed, and Allderdice from the Pittsburgh City League is the fourth seed. Allderdice will have to trek to Hollidaysburg in one of the semi-final games. DuBois will make the trip to Erie to meet Cathedral Prep in the other semi-final.
