Believe it or not, we enter week 5 of the High School Football season in Pennsylvania. As the end of this game would signal passing the halfway mark on the 2024 season, it would also mean Berwick would earn its first win.
For the first time since the 1970s, Berwick is winless throughout the first four games. Throughout these games, Berwick has averaged less than 7 points per game. Defensively they have looked improved, but have still allowed over 25 points in all but one game this year. So far, it’s been hard to pinpoint the problem with Berwick. They have been poor in most if not all of the position groups after four games. But, tonight, an opportunity arose against a struggling Hanover team, and Berwick took it.
Hanover has struggled so far in 2024, a lot. Including tonight, they have allowed 35 or more points in 4 of their first 5 contests. Offensively, they have also not been able to find success. They have scored double digits twice this year, including with two shutouts in five games. As they entered Crispin Field, there was an opportunity to find success. Berwick and Hanover have scored under 10 points per game offensively. For Hanover, this could have been a potential “get right” spot, but it was not.
For it being 0-4 vs 0-4, the Crispin Field crowd was well packed ready to watch their Bulldogs fight for their first win.
Under three minutes into the game, Berwick scored their 3rd offensive touchdown of the season. Ty’Meere Wilkerson showed off his D-1 speed as he ran right by the Hanover defense to give Berwick an early lead.

Then, the Berwick special teams caused a safety on a badly snapped punt, and Berwick led 9-0. After another defensive stop, Berwick would find the endzone with a Billy Hanson TD run, 16-0 Berwick.
At this point, Berwick was dominating. For the first time this year, everything was going well. Ty’Meere Wilkerson broke containment once more on this TD run to get the game to a 3-score lead.

At this point, Hanover was deflated. Once again, their opponent got the best of them early. Berwick would add on a few more scores and in the end won 48-6.
It’s another tough Friday Night for the Hanover Hawkeyes. Berwick was living in their backfield all game, and Hanover couldn’t establish anything. They did, however, find the endzone on a jump ball late into the 4th quarter to prevent a shutout. For Hanover, it’s all about starting fast, and not playing catch-up all night. Within 8 game time minutes, Berwick had already led by 3-scores. No matter how well they could’ve battled, the 3-score deficit that early is almost insurmountable. Hanover is home against Tunkhannock next week at 7.
Berwick finally gets into the win column, after 4 weeks of losing. Speaking on the win, Head Coach CJ Curry said: ” It feels good to get that first win. We just needed one good game to jumpstart us. Everybody stepped up.” Berwick had great success running the football, busting off 7-8 yards on seemingly every play. Although a cliche, this win was a “three phases of the game” win. Defensively, they completely dominated the line of scrimmage and played great pass coverage all night. On special teams, they blocked a punt that resulted in a safety and had decent returns. Offensively, the final score says it all, they scored 48 points and looked in control for 48 minutes. Berwick is at Wyoming Area next Friday at 7,
