October, already. As the leaves fall and the temperature decreases, High School Football enters its peak month. It’s week 7 already. Teams across the state are crossing their Ts and dotting their Is in anticipation of the playoffs in a few short weeks. The same stands true for Berwick and Nanticoke. Two struggling teams clashed in a showdown that saw a Bulldog dominance.
The 2024 campaign has not gone to plan for the Berwick Bulldogs. The move down from 4A to 3A, coupled with the move down from District 1 to District 2 in the Wyoming Valley Conference has not solved the Bulldog’s problems. After an uncharacteristic 3-7 season a year ago, they’ve followed it up with just 1 win in 6 games. Tonight, however, was different. Fresh off a win the last time they played at Crispin Field, Berwick was able to make it back-to-back at home.
The struggles for Nanticoke have been similar to Berwick’s. After all, both teams entered the game with an identical 1-5 record. Nanticok’s only win this year came against the Tuckhannock Tigers as they won 14-12. The Trojans are young and inexperienced. Entering the game, they had an opportunity to grab their 2nd win of 2024. In the end, Berwick had the upper hand, here’s how it played out:
Before the game started, there was a touching tribute to former Nanticoke and Berwick Coach Scott Dennis. Coach Dennis passed away just days before the 2024 season started. His strong ties to both communities were on full display as they held a ceremony and a moment of silence.
The game started with a quick three-and-out for Nanticoke on their opening drive. On three straight runs, Berwick was swarming Nanticoke with ease to start the game.
Once Berwick got the ball, they knew where to go. Ty’Meere Wilkerson took their opening offensive snap to the endzone for 7 early Berwick points. After losing last week in near-blowout fashion against Wyoming Area, Berwick had looked to put that behind them in this game.

Wilkerson wanted more. With just under three minutes left in the first quarter, Ty’Meere Wilkerson found a hole and used his track speed to go 70 yards, Berwick 14-0. Berwick looked to have Nanticoke confused all first half. The defense was absolutely swarming to the ball carrier on almost every snap. After another Berwick score that had them leading 21-0, QB Billy Hanson found WR Julian Howie for a deep contested TD grab.

After another Wilkerson TD, Berwick had put a mercy rule on Nanticoke in under 24 minutes. Late into the 4th quarter, QB Ashton Smith took a scramble for 6, and Berwick won 41-0.
For Nanticoke, the struggles continue. In the game, they were completely one-dimensional. They ran the ball time and again, but found no success. Defensively, they just couldn’t keep up with Berwick’s speed on the edge. In a game where they got down early, being a run-heavy team just simply doesn’t cut it. Berwick did not respect the pass, because they didn’t have to. Nanticoke is home next Friday Night against Honesdale.
Berwick played their best all-around game of the season tonight. They looked fluent all game long. Although some fumble problems early, Berwick was relatively sound with the football throughout the game. Defensively, they were phenomenal. Speaking on the Defense, Head Coach CJ Curry said, ” 755 days since the last Berwick shutout win, it feels good to get that one. It’s been great to see how far they’ve come from the beginning of the season to now.” Berwick is away against Williamsport next Friday Night.
