With Offense Struggling, The Golden Hawks Defense Steps Up to Preserve Win 21-0
By Brian Ptashinski @BPtashinski

BETHLEHEM- For the second straight week, the Bethlehem Catholic Defense arose to the challenge. After stymieing the Zephyrs of Whitehall, a week ago 35-7, the Golden Hawk defense stood tall again as the did not allow the Pocono Mountain West Panthers to even sniff the end zone in a 21-0 victory Saturday afternoon at BASD Stadium before a sparse crowd.

The offense sputtered for much of the game, in a contest that the Hawks were heavily favored in. The Hawks held a slim 6-0 lead at halftime thanks to a brilliant 24 yard scoring reception by Jaiden Ellis-Lahey off a Luke Thomas pass with 1:46 left in the second quarter. The scoring play capped off a 61 yard drive on 8 plays. The try for two-points failed leaving the score 6-0 as the teams headed for the locker room.

Neither team could create any offense in the third quarter and the score remained at 6-0 heading into the final twelve minutes.

Panther quarterback Ian McHugh was harassed all game by the penetrating Hawks’ front seven, facing an all-out rush threw an errant pass that Antonio “Izzy” Ramos-Dobins picked off at the Panther 31 and weaved his way into the end zone to make it 14-0 after the two-point conversion with 9:11 left in the contest.

Both quarterbacks had issues completing passes McHugh, only making his third start completed 15 of 30 passes for 55 yards with the one interception and the deepest penetration into Becahi territory was inside the 30, but a couple of penalties and a sack forced a punt. Thomas, only completed eight passes in seventeen attempts for an even hundred yards and the one TD for the Hawks.

Running back Rahmel Terry, capped off the scoring with a one yard score with just under four minutes left on a drive that took only five plays covering 50 yards.

Bethlehem Catholic (2-0) will face their stiffest test this Friday at Andrew S. Leh Stadium as they play the unbeaten Nazareth Blue Eagles, who are coming off a huge 28-10 win over Parkland. Pocono Mountain West (0-2) will try to get into the win column as they host a winless Louis Dieruff team Friday night

Izzy Ramos, besides his pick-six also carried the ball three times for 15 yards had this to say after the game:

With the contest against the Blue Eagles on the horizon, Bethlehem Catholic Coach Kyle Haas had this to say about his team’s performance Saturday and what he expects going into the game with Nazareth:
