Wyoming Seminary scored 35 first quarter points and never looked back Saturday afternoon at Donald H. Jones Stadium in Saltsburg home of The Kiski School Cougars.  The visiting Blue Knights tacked on another 19 to defeat Kiski 54-22 and thereby upped their record to 2-0 early in the 2022 campaign.

“Our guys were really locked into this game,” stated Wyoming Seminary’s head coach Kevin Burke.  Reed Swanson who is a wide receiver on offense and plays cornerback on defense, and Jaden Keefner, the Blue Knight’s quarterback, seemed locked in even more than their teammates.  Swanson caught 3 touchdown passes and had a pick six for a fourth TD.  Keefner threw for 4 touchdowns and ran for another score.

Burke had this to say about the game’s two stars, “Keefner has a big arm and is in only his second year at the quarterback position.  His opportunities to play in college are going to grow as he now knows the position and nothing phases him.  He just moves on to the next play.  Swanson is a legitimate 6’5” receiver and moves his feet well.  He’s going to get some offers.”

“The past two years (2020 and 2021) they have played us tough,” said Burke.  “Last year when we played Kiski we were down 12-6 at halftime with 3 turnovers, so we really kept that on the front of our minds.  It was our job to come here and execute,” he continued.

And execute they did as Wyoming scored every time they had the ball, except the last possession when the Blue Knights turned it over on downs at the Cougar 18.  On top of that, the Wyoming Seminary defense scored on two of the four first half turnovers they caused.

But Kiski battled through that first half adversity scoring their second touchdown with under six minutes left in the second quarter to give themselves a little life by cutting the deficit to 35-15.  That’s when the Blue Knight offense and defense combined to put the game away.  Using all but 16 seconds, Wyoming Seminary’s 58-yard drive was capped off by Keefner’s 3-yard TD run on fourth down.  Then the defense sacked Kiski’s quarterback causing him to fumble the ball that was picked up by Edwin Lora, Jr. who bulled his way 6 yards into the end zone.  Those 2 touchdowns in the last 16 seconds of the half gave Wyoming a 47-15 lead that sealed Kiski’s fate.  The loss dropped Kiski’s record to 1-2 for the year.

Wyoming outgained Kiski 389 to 241 as the Blue Knights had 217 yards rushing and 172 yards passing.  Keefner was 10-16 for 172 yards and the 4 scores passing.  William Lufiau led all rushers with 78 yards on 15 carries.  The Cougars had 73 yards rushing and 168 passing.  Matt Shea was 4-7 passing for 121 yards and a touchdown for Kiski.  He also ran 3 yards for a TD.  Andrew Baublitz was their leading ball carrier with 47 yards on 6 totes.
